Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: The Unsanctioned Honeymoon

The traditional honeymoon was a non-starter. Instead of a beach resort or a European tour, Liam had arranged an Unsanctioned Honeymoon a strategic relocation to a secondary, highly isolated residence deep in the Canadian wilderness, owned by a shell corporation and unknown even to the Sterling board. The goal was to remove Abby and the child from Elias's known theatre of operations and give Rook time to execute the counter-protocols.

The transport was a masterclass in covert travel: an unmarked helicopter, flying under cover of darkness, landing in a remote, heavily forested area. The destination was less a house and more an autonomous, secure bunker disguised as a rustic lodge steel reinforced log walls, solar powered independence, and its own short-wave communication system.

The first 24 hours of their marriage were spent in that strange, pristine silence, surrounded by towering pines and the constant, invisible presence of a small, dedicated security team. There was no room service, no media, and no performance required.

Abby finally got to wear her own clothes, but the relief of losing the silk armor was overshadowed by the suffocating reality of her isolation. She spent the morning unpacking the few books she was allowed to bring, feeling an intense loneliness in the face of the endless forest.

Liam, meanwhile, was not honeymooning; he was launching the counter-offensive. He had set up a secure communications hub in the lodge's basement, managing the corporation and the hunt for Elias simultaneously.

When he finally emerged, hours later, he looked exhausted, the adrenaline of the wedding and the security breach draining away. He found Abby in the main living area, staring out the massive, reinforced windows at the wilderness.

"The protocols are in place," Liam said, walking up behind her. He didn't touch her, sensing the brittle nature of her mood. "The board thinks we are on a yacht in the Mediterranean. Rook has deployed a ghost team to start tracking Elias's known associates and accounts. This lodge is off-grid. We are safe here."

Abby turned to face him, the vast, empty room emphasizing the new, formal distance between them. "We're safe, Liam. But at what cost? You have trapped us both in this bunker. I have no contact with my friend, no news of my mother, and the entire world thinks I am deliriously happy on a beach somewhere. This is not a marriage; it's strategic confinement."

"It's a necessary buffer," he corrected, his voice firm. "I am giving Rook the time he needs to neutralize the threat. Once Elias is contained, we return to New York, and we begin the process of building the life you want the life where you are a full executive partner."

"And what about tonight?" Abby challenged, stepping closer, needing to test the boundaries of their contractual, sealed relationship. "The contract is signed, the security is established, and the witnesses have gone home. Is tonight about partnership, or is it still about control?"

Liam's expression darkened with a complex mix of desire and the constant pressure of his duty. He reached out and gently took the hem of her simple cotton shirt between his fingers.

"Tonight is about the start of our truth," he murmured, his gaze intense. "The performance is over, Abby. We are alone. We are married. We are partners in this child and in this war. And tonight, I need to remind myself that my greatest weakness is also my greatest strength."

He pulled her against him, kissing her with a raw, desperate intensity that held no performance. It was a kiss of relief, of ownership, and of a man acknowledging the terror he felt. It wasn't gentle; it was demanding, possessive, and absolutely real. In the silent safety of the bunker, their marriage, built on lies and contracts, began with a moment of fierce, unmediated honesty.
