Storms usually arrived with warning.
A distant rumble.
A slow gathering of clouds.
Wind whispering through the trees before the first drop of rain ever touched the earth.
But the storm above Blackclaw did not come like that.
It erupted.
One moment the sky was dark and heavy. The next, it shattered open with a thunderclap so violent the entire estate trembled beneath it. The ancient towers groaned. Windows rattled. The iron gates along the outer wall shook on their hinges.
Warriors in the courtyard instinctively reached for their weapons.
Selara felt the sound in her bones.
Not just thunder.
Recognition.
She stood alone on the highest war balcony of the Blackclaw estate, rain soaking through her dark hair and thin tunic as wind tore across the stone. Cold droplets ran down her arms, but the chill barely registered.
Her attention was fixed on the sky.
The clouds above were wrong.
They twisted in unnatural patterns, folding inward as if the heavens themselves were being pulled toward a single point.
Lightning crawled sideways across the darkness.
Not down.
Sideways.
Branches of silver energy stretched across the sky like cracks in glass, illuminating the entire valley in brief flashes of white light.
The forest beyond the estate bent beneath the pressure of the storm.
Trees swayed violently.
Branches snapped.
Even the animals had gone silent.
Kaelen was no longer hiding.
He was coming.
Selara pressed her palm against her chest as the Nightborne blood inside her surged violently. Silver light flickered beneath her skin, racing through her veins like liquid lightning.
Her breathing slowed.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Power without control was destruction.
Footsteps approached behind her.
She didn't turn.
She already knew who it was.
Draven stopped beside her, rain sliding down his bare arms. The Alpha's presence was impossible to ignore. Even in the middle of a supernatural storm, he radiated a grounded, immovable strength that steadied everything around him.
His eyes were fixed on the sky.
"You feel it," he said quietly.
Selara nodded.
"He's done watching."
Draven's jaw tightened.
"He's tearing at the veil."
Selara frowned slightly.
"The veil?"
"The barrier between worlds," Draven replied grimly. "Magic on this scale doesn't come without a price."
Lightning ripped across the sky again.
Draven continued.
"Blood," he said. "Sacrifice. Lives."
Selara's fingers tightened around the stone railing.
"So this isn't intimidation."
"No," Draven said.
His gaze hardened.
"It's a declaration of war."
Another thunderclap detonated above them.
The estate's protective wards flared instantly, glowing blue along the walls as they absorbed the impact. Even so, the ground trembled beneath their feet.
Below them, chaos erupted.
Warriors rushed across the courtyard. Orders were shouted. Shields were raised. Weapons flashed in the stormlight.
Blackclaw had entered full battle readiness.
Selara turned toward Draven.
"He's using the storm to hide his attack."
Draven shook his head.
"No."
His voice dropped lower.
"He is the storm."
As if answering his words, the rain changed direction.
Instead of falling straight down, droplets twisted sideways in the air.
Selara's eyes widened.
The rain accelerated suddenly, slicing through the courtyard like thousands of tiny blades.
A guard screamed as the first droplets struck him. Blood sprayed across the stone before other warriors pulled him behind raised shields.
Selara felt something inside her snap.
"Enough."
Power exploded from her body.
Silver energy surged outward in a brilliant flash, expanding into a shimmering dome that covered the entire courtyard.
The deadly rain struck the barrier and evaporated instantly.
Steam rolled through the battlefield.
Draven turned sharply toward her.
"You're burning your power too fast."
Selara wiped rain from her face.
"We don't have time to be careful."
A laugh echoed through the storm.
Low.
Smooth.
Familiar.
Kaelen.
His voice slipped through the wind like silk wrapped around poison.
"Still standing, little Nightborne?"
Shadows along the estate walls began to move.
They peeled away from the stone like living creatures.
Then they rose.
Figures formed from darkness itself.
Twisted wolves.
Half-human shapes with glowing eyes.
Creatures made of shadow and magic.
Their mouths opened in silent hunger.
"Defensive line!" Draven roared.
Blackclaw warriors surged forward instantly, shields locking together.
The shadow creatures attacked.
They hit the line like a wave.
Selara leapt from the balcony.
Silver energy wrapped around her body as she fell.
She landed in the courtyard with explosive force.
Stone shattered beneath her feet.
Moonlight formed twin daggers in her hands, curved blades humming with Nightborne power.
The first creature lunged.
Selara moved.
Her blade cut cleanly through its chest.
It dissolved into black ash.
Another shadow rushed her.
She ducked beneath its claws, spun behind it, and drove her dagger into its spine.
The creature collapsed.
More came.
Selara moved faster.
Spin.
Strike.
Slash.
Shadow creatures fell one after another.
Across the battlefield, Draven fought like a living weapon.
The Alpha tore through enemies with brutal efficiency. His claws flashed through the stormlight as he ripped shadow creatures apart.
Where he moved, enemies died.
Selara and Draven fell into rhythm.
She covered his blind spots.
He intercepted attacks meant for her.
Neither spoke.
They didn't need to.
Then lightning struck the battlefield.
Not randomly.
Intentionally.
A bolt curved through the sky and slammed into a Blackclaw warrior.
His shield exploded.
Selara's eyes widened.
"The lightning"
"It's targeting us," Draven finished.
Another bolt fell.
Selara threw her hand forward.
Silver energy surged upward, catching the lightning in midair and tearing it apart into harmless sparks.
But the effort sent pain ripping through her body.
Her knees buckled.
Draven caught her instantly.
"You're pushing too far."
Selara grabbed his arm.
"Then stop him."
The storm suddenly went quiet.
The rain slowed.
The wind stilled.
Then the clouds split open.
Kaelen appeared.
Not fully.
His form shimmered above the battlements, half-solid and wrapped in swirling darkness.
His glowing blue eyes scanned the battlefield.
Then he smiled.
"You disappoint me, Draven."
Draven snarled.
"Come down here."
Kaelen ignored him.
His gaze shifted to Selara.
"You're stronger than I expected."
Selara rose slowly.
"I'm stronger than you hoped."
Kaelen tilted his head.
"We'll see."
He lifted his hand.
The ground beneath the courtyard cracked.
Ancient runes ignited across the stone floor.
Selara froze.
Her blood reacted instantly.
Silver light flared from her veins.
"That symbol…" she whispered.
Kaelen smiled wider.
"Yes."
The sigil pulsed with dark energy.
Selara felt its power clawing at her mind.
"It's Nightborne magic."
Kaelen's voice dropped into something almost reverent.
"Your ancestors built incredible weapons."
The sigil exploded with power.
Energy surged upward like a tidal wave.
Selara screamed as the magic slammed into her.
Memories flooded her mind.
Ancient cities.
Nightborne rulers.
War.
Blood.
Power.
So much power.
She collapsed to her knees.
Draven caught her immediately.
"Stay with me."
Selara clutched his shirt.
"He's using my blood…"
Draven's eyes burned with fury.
"He will regret that."
The sigil cracked.
Something rose from inside it.
A massive creature clawed its way out of the glowing runes.
Shadow fused with Nightborne magic.
Its body covered in glowing symbols.
Its roar shattered every window facing the courtyard.
Kaelen's voice echoed across the battlefield.
"Behold."
Selara forced herself to stand.
"This is what you were meant to command."
The creature charged.
Draven shifted instantly, slamming into it with full force.
But the beast barely staggered.
It struck back.
Draven crashed into a pillar with bone-rattling force.
"Draven!"
Selara's scream tore through the storm.
Something inside her broke free.
Her power exploded outward.
Not chaotic.
Not wild.
Focused.
Controlled.
Silver light flooded the battlefield.
The creature froze.
Kaelen's smile faded.
Selara stepped forward slowly.
Her eyes glowed like silver fire.
"You don't control me."
Her voice carried across the entire estate.
"And I will never be your weapon."
She raised her hand.
The sigil shattered.
The creature screamed as its body unraveled into fragments of shadow.
The magic holding it together collapsed.
Within seconds, it was gone.
Silence fell across the battlefield.
Kaelen stared at her.
For the first time
He looked unsettled.
"This changes nothing," he said quietly.
Selara lifted her glowing dagger.
"It changes everything."
Lightning split the sky again.
Far beyond the storm, something ancient stirred.
Watching.
Waiting.
And Selara realized with terrifying clarity
Tonight had only been the beginning.
