The compound gates opened before sunrise.
The sky was still dark, painted in deep shades of blue and violet, while a cold wind drifted across the broken land beyond the walls. The fires from the previous day's battle had burned down to smoldering ash, leaving faint trails of smoke rising slowly into the morning air.
Most of the compound still slept.
But not the strike team.
Kael stood near the outer gate, tightening the straps on his worn coat while studying the distant hills where Sector 17 lay hidden. From this distance the landscape looked quiet, almost peaceful. Tall grass moved gently under the wind, and the silhouettes of ruined buildings dotted the horizon like forgotten monuments.
Yet the System message from the night before remained clear in his mind.
Twelve thousand beasts gathering in one place.
Nothing about that was natural.
Footsteps approached behind him.
Lina stepped forward, adjusting the silver chain around her neck as faint pulses of light flickered along its surface. Her expression was calm, but her eyes moved constantly, scanning the darkness beyond the compound walls as if listening to something others could not hear.
"The echoes out there are strange," she said quietly.
Kael glanced at her. "Strange how?"
"Too many of them," she replied. "Memories. Deaths. Fights. It feels like the land itself remembers something terrible happening there."
Kael didn't respond right away. He simply looked back toward the distant hills.
"That sounds about right."
More footsteps followed.
Uzo walked out of the compound carrying a large metal hammer across his shoulder. The weapon had several cracks along its surface from previous battles, but the massive fighter didn't seem concerned. He stretched his neck slowly, then rolled his shoulders as if preparing for another long day of work.
"I still think this is a bad idea," he muttered.
Jide appeared next, several glowing orbs of soft golden light floating lazily around him. The spheres cast faint illumination across the ground as he approached the group, his expression thoughtful but steady.
"Everything we do these days is a bad idea," Jide said calmly.
Uzo snorted.
"Fair point."
From above came the sound of wings.
Zara descended from the compound wall and landed lightly beside the group. Her wings folded neatly behind her back, feathers rustling as she adjusted the straps on her equipment belt.
"Scouted the route," she reported. "No major beast movement nearby."
She paused briefly before adding something else.
"But the closer we get to Sector 17… the quieter things become."
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"Quiet?"
"Too quiet," Zara said.
Enoch was the last to arrive.
The quiet man stepped out through the gate while adjusting the pendant that rested against his chest. His expression remained calm as always, but the faint tension in his shoulders suggested he had already sensed something unusual about the mission ahead.
The team gathered just outside the compound walls.
Behind them, the heavy metal gates slowly closed with a deep grinding sound.
Ifeoma stood on the wall above, watching them leave.
"Don't die out there," she called down.
Uzo grinned and waved lazily.
"No promises."
Kael gave a small nod toward the wall before turning toward the hills.
"Let's move."
The team began their journey just as the first light of dawn crept across the sky.
The land outside the compound had changed drastically over the past months. What once might have been farmland or suburban roads was now a wilderness of twisted vegetation and scattered ruins. Trees grew at strange angles, their trunks thick and warped from mutation. Patches of blackened earth marked the places where rifts had opened in the past.
Every now and then they passed the remains of beasts that had died during earlier migrations.
Bones.
Claws.
Broken horns.
Signs that the world outside human walls had become something entirely different.
As they moved across the open ground, Kael felt the familiar pulse of the System humming quietly inside his mind. The hunger within him remained calm for now, resting after the previous battles, but the faint awareness of nearby life constantly brushed against his senses.
Thousands of creatures.
Somewhere ahead.
They walked for nearly two hours before the hills finally rose before them.
Sector 17 sat halfway up the largest hill, partially hidden behind collapsed concrete structures and rusted military equipment. From a distance the bunker entrance looked like a giant scar carved into the earth.
The steel blast door that once protected the facility had been torn open long ago.
Something moved in the grass near the hill.
Zara suddenly raised a hand.
"Stop."
The team froze instantly.
She crouched low and focused her eyes toward the bunker entrance.
"Movement."
Kael stepped forward slowly.
At first he saw nothing.
Then the shapes began to appear.
Eyes.
Hundreds of them.
Glowing faintly in the early morning light.
The grass around the hill shifted as large forms began emerging from the shadows.
Mutated wolves.
Bone hyenas.
Massive scavenger birds perched along the ruined structures surrounding the bunker entrance.
The beasts stared silently at the approaching humans.
There were far more of them than the team had expected.
Uzo let out a low whistle.
"Well… that's not good."
Kael counted quickly.
Dozens.
No.
Hundreds.
The creatures formed a loose ring around the bunker entrance, their bodies tense and ready.
For a brief moment neither side moved.
Then a wolf howled.
The sound echoed across the hillside.
And the beasts attacked.
The first wave rushed forward with terrifying speed.
Claws tore through the grass while jaws snapped hungrily toward the humans.
Kael stepped forward to meet them.
His crimson-silver veins ignited beneath his skin as power surged through his body.
Claws extended from his fingers.
The first wolf leapt toward his throat.
Kael caught it midair.
His hand closed around its skull with crushing force.
Bone cracked.
Blood sprayed.
The System reacted instantly.

More beasts followed.
Kael moved like a storm through the charging pack.
His claws ripped through muscle and bone while crimson energy flared around his arms.
Beside him, Uzo swung his hammer in wide brutal arcs.
The massive weapon crushed a bone hyena against the ground with a sickening crack.

Jide raised both hands as his floating orbs brightened.
Golden barriers erupted in front of the team, blocking several lunging creatures before sending bursts of light crashing into their bodies.
Zara took to the air, diving through the battlefield like a falcon.
Her blades flashed as she cut through the neck of a giant crow mid-flight.
Feathers and blood scattered across the hillside.
Lina stood slightly behind the front line, her silver chain glowing softly as echoes formed around her.
Two ghostly warriors appeared beside her, weapons raised.
They charged forward into the fight, clashing with the beasts in bursts of fading light.
The battle spread across the hillside.
More creatures poured from the tall grass.
Kael tore through them relentlessly.
Each kill triggered another flicker of the System.

The hillside quickly became a chaotic battlefield of blood and movement.
Yet something about the attack felt strange.
The beasts fought fiercely…
But they never surrounded the team completely.
Instead they kept pushing in a single direction.
Toward the bunker entrance.
Kael noticed it first.
"These things aren't trying to stop us," he said between strikes.
Uzo smashed another hyena into the ground and glanced up.
"What do you mean?"
"They're herding us."
The realization spread quickly through the group.
The beasts attacked in waves, forcing the team step by step toward the broken bunker door.
As soon as they reached the entrance tunnel…
The attacks suddenly stopped.
The creatures outside halted their advance.
They stood quietly at the edge of the hill, watching the humans disappear into the darkness below.
Uzo wiped blood from his face and frowned.
"Okay… that's creepy."
Kael turned back toward the tunnel.
The interior of the bunker stretched downward in a long concrete corridor lit by flickering emergency lights.
Cold air flowed up from the depths.
Something far below pulsed faintly in Kael's senses.
Alive.
Watching.
The System appeared again.

Kael stared at the message briefly.
Then he closed it.
"Well," he said quietly.
"Looks like we're going underground."
