Chapter 48 - Chapter 47 : The Barracks Of Bone

The heavy metal door at the end of the tunnel groaned as Kael pushed it open. Rust flaked off the hinges and drifted to the floor like brittle snow. The stale air that spilled from the other side carried a smell that made everyone's nose wrinkle instantly. It was thick and rotten, like old blood left too long in a closed room.

Behind him, the others stepped through carefully.

The bunker corridor widened into a long rectangular chamber filled with rows of rusted metal frames. At first glance it looked like an ordinary barracks. Old military bunk beds stood in uneven lines across the room. Lockers leaned against cracked concrete walls. Torn mattresses hung off the frames like shedding skin.

But the floor told a different story.

Bones covered it.

Some were human. Some were not.

Skulls lay cracked open like broken bowls. Rib cages were scattered in messy piles. Something had dragged bodies here over and over again until the room had turned into a graveyard.

Uzo exhaled slowly through his nose. "Yeah… this place definitely went to hell."

Zara's wings shifted slightly behind her shoulders as she scanned the room. "Look at the walls."

Long claw marks stretched across the concrete, deep enough that dust had gathered inside them.

"Feeding ground," Jide murmured quietly.

The golden orbs floating around him dimmed slightly as if reacting to the oppressive atmosphere.

Lina crouched beside one of the bone piles, examining it carefully. Her fingers brushed across a fractured femur before she stood again.

"Different species," she said. "These bones aren't all human."

Kael walked slowly forward, his boots crunching softly against the brittle remains.

His instincts were already screaming.

Something lived here.

Or many things.

The Hunger Voice stirred lazily in the back of his mind.

Food.

But weak food.

Something bigger is deeper.

Kael's silver-red eyes scanned the shadows between the bunk beds. The red emergency lights flickering overhead made the entire room pulse faintly like a wounded heart.

Then something moved.

A faint scraping sound came from the ceiling vents.

Everyone heard it.

Uzo's grip tightened around his massive hammer.

Zara's wings spread slightly, feathers rustling as she crouched into a ready stance.

The first creature dropped from the vent without warning.

It hit the ground with a wet thud and immediately lunged.

The thing looked like a twisted mix between a lizard and a corpse. Its body was long and thin, its limbs bent in unnatural angles as if its bones had grown wrong. Its mouth opened far too wide, revealing rows of jagged teeth dripping with saliva.

Kael moved before it even finished landing.

His arm snapped forward.

His claws punched through the creature's skull with a sickening crunch.

The body twitched violently before going still.

A faint blue glow flickered in front of his eyes.

But the fight had already begun.

More creatures poured from the vents.

Three dropped behind Zara. Two more crawled along the ceiling toward Jide. One burst from beneath a broken mattress near Uzo's feet.

"Contact!" Uzo roared.

His hammer swung in a brutal horizontal arc that crushed the creature rushing him. Bone and flesh exploded against the wall behind it as the impact echoed through the barracks.

Another crawler leaped toward Zara.

She twisted sideways, wings snapping open with a powerful gust that threw the creature off balance. Before it could recover, she kicked off the ground and spun through the air.

Her blade flashed.

The crawler's head separated cleanly from its body.

Blood sprayed across the floor as the corpse collapsed.

Above them, the ceiling vents rattled violently.

More creatures.

Too many.

"Stay together!" Lina shouted.

She slammed her palm against the wall beside her.

The silver chain around her neck pulsed once.

A ripple of faint light spread across the concrete.

An echo formed.

A translucent figure appeared beside her — a soldier wearing an old combat uniform, rifle raised. The ghostly image looked confused for half a second before instinct took over.

The echo soldier fired.

Phantom bullets ripped through the charging creatures, slowing them just long enough for the team to counterattack.

Jide lifted both hands.

The golden orbs floating around him shot forward like comets.

One smashed into a crawler mid-leap, sending it crashing into a bunk bed frame.

Another orb expanded into a glowing shield that blocked two more creatures from reaching Lina.

"Left side!" he warned.

Kael moved instantly.

He stepped forward and slammed his foot into the ground.

Crimson energy surged outward.

Blood that had soaked into the floor over years suddenly obeyed him.

Thin red spikes burst upward between the bunk beds like a field of spears.

Two creatures ran directly into them.

Their bodies were impaled instantly.

[Kill Registered]

[Tunnel Crawler Destroyed]

[Minor Biomass Absorbed]

Another crawler darted past the spikes, racing straight toward Kael.

It moved fast.

Too fast for normal reflexes.

But Kael's vision shifted.

Time fractured.

For a brief moment he saw three possible paths the creature could take.

Left.

Right.

Straight for his throat.

The third future solidified.

Kael stepped sideways half a second before the attack arrived.

His claws sliced through the creature's neck as it passed him.

Black blood splashed across the wall.

[Future Glimpse Active]

[Temporal Prediction Successful]

Behind him, Uzo fought like a wrecking ball.

The narrow space between bunk beds forced him to adjust his fighting style. Instead of wide swings, he drove the hammer forward like a battering ram, crushing anything that came too close.

One crawler jumped onto his shoulder and bit down.

Uzo roared and slammed his own back against the metal frame behind him.

The creature's spine snapped instantly.

"Get off me!" he growled, throwing the corpse aside.

Zara vaulted over two bunk beds in a single motion, landing beside Lina as three crawlers closed in.

Her wings beat once, sending a burst of air that staggered them.

Then she attacked.

Her blade flashed repeatedly, carving clean lines through flesh and bone with precise efficiency.

Each strike was controlled.

No wasted movement.

Jide's voice rose from across the room.

"More vents!"

The metal grates above them burst open.

Bone spiders poured out.

These creatures were smaller but far more numerous. Their skeletal legs clicked rapidly as they dropped toward the floor in a living rain of chitin and bone.

Lina reacted immediately.

She slammed both hands against the ground.

The echo soldier beside her multiplied.

Three phantom figures appeared and opened fire in synchronized bursts.

Ghostly gunfire filled the barracks.

Several spiders exploded mid-air.

But dozens still reached the ground.

One scuttled toward Jide's leg.

He reacted instantly.

A golden orb dropped from the air and expanded into a dome around him. The spider slammed into the barrier and bounced backward.

Another orb shot forward and crushed it against the wall.

Kael moved through the chaos like a predator.

His claws tore through enemies with brutal efficiency, but his mind remained focused on the deeper presence beneath the bunker.

The Hunger Voice stirred again.

Still coming.

More bones below.

Stronger meat.

Kael grabbed a lunging crawler by the throat.

Instead of killing it instantly, he squeezed.

The creature thrashed violently.

Then Kael devoured it.

Its body collapsed into crimson energy that flowed directly into his veins.

Within minutes the barracks fell silent again.

The last bone spider twitched once before going still beneath Zara's boot.

No one spoke for a moment.

Everyone breathed heavily.

Uzo wiped sweat from his forehead. "That was… unpleasant."

Jide leaned against a locker, his orbs slowly dimming as he caught his breath.

Lina dismissed her echo soldiers. The ghostly figures faded like mist.

Kael stepped away from the corpses and opened his system panel.

The glowing interface appeared before him.

A new warning suddenly appeared beneath the panel.

[Predator Instinct Triggered]

[Apex Biological Entity Detected]

Kael closed the panel slowly.

The others were watching him.

"What is it?" Lina asked.

Kael looked toward the massive reinforced door at the far end of the barracks.

"Something big is waiting below."

No one argued.

They all felt it too.

Uzo rolled his shoulders and lifted his hammer again. "Well… let's go meet it."

The heavy laboratory door groaned open under Kael's strength.

Beyond it lay another section of the bunker.

The research wing.

Broken glass crunched beneath their boots as they stepped inside.

Large containment tanks lined the walls. Most had shattered long ago, leaving dried chemical stains across the floor. Metal operating tables stood overturned in the center of the room.

Old computer screens flickered weakly in the darkness.

Jide approached one of them and wiped the dust away.

Static flashed across the display.

Fragments of old text appeared.

"Genetic Adaptation Trial 04…"

"Mutation stability failure…"

"Emergency lockdown…"

Lina's face tightened.

"This bunker wasn't just a shelter."

She walked toward one of the intact tanks.

Something moved inside.

Everyone froze.

A shape shifted behind the cloudy glass.

Then a hand slammed against the inside of the container.

The glass cracked slightly.

A human face pressed against the surface.

But it barely looked human anymore.

The man's skin had stretched thin across twisted bones. One eye bulged outward while the other twitched uncontrollably. Veins pulsed beneath his skin like living worms.

His lips moved slowly.

Kael stepped closer.

The man's gaze locked onto him.

Fear filled his expression.

"They… fed it…" he whispered hoarsely.

His voice sounded like broken glass scraping together.

"Too many bones… too many… it keeps growing…"

He coughed violently.

Blood dripped down the inside of the tank.

Then his eyes widened in terror.

"The shepherd… the shepherd is waiting…"

His body suddenly convulsed.

Then went limp.

Dead.

Silence filled the lab.

Lina placed her hand against the cracked glass.

Her chain glowed faintly.

An echo rose from the wall behind them.

The ghostly image of a scientist appeared, shouting frantically.

"Shut down the evolution chamber!"

Another voice screamed.

Alarms blared.

Then the memory collapsed into darkness.

No one spoke for a long time.

Finally Uzo muttered quietly.

"I think we just found the reason this place became a nightmare."

Kael looked toward the enormous reinforced door at the far end of the lab.

It stood half open.

Beyond it, darkness stretched into a massive underground chamber.

Low growls echoed from inside.

Hundreds of them.

Kael stepped forward.

The team followed.

They entered the chamber.

And stopped.

Thousands of beasts filled the cavern.

Mutated wolves.

Bone-covered lizards.

Massive insects with skeletal limbs.

Every single one turned to look at them.

For a moment Kael thought they would attack.

Instead something strange happened.

The creatures slowly stepped aside.

They formed a path.

All of them lowering their heads.

Not toward Kael.

Toward the massive sealed gate at the far end of the cavern.

The gate began to open.

Metal screamed against metal as it slowly slid apart.

Darkness poured from the chamber beyond.

Something tall moved inside the shadows.

And then a deep, heavy breathing sound echoed through the bunker.

The Shepherd had awakened.
