Chapter 50 - Chapter 49: Devour The Shepherd

The Shepherd's scream shook the cavern.

It wasn't a roar of pain. It was rage. Pure, furious disbelief.

Kael's arm was buried deep inside its chest, fingers locked around the pulsing Chimera Core as the devour continued. Blood poured down both their bodies, warm and slick, splashing across the shattered concrete floor as the giant creature struggled to tear him away.

The Shepherd grabbed Kael's throat with its massive hand and lifted him off the ground like a broken doll. Its grip tightened instantly, crushing his windpipe as it slammed him backward into the ground.

The impact sent cracks racing through the concrete.

"Let go you leech!"

Still, Kael refused to let go.

The Chimera Core throbbed violently in his grip, trying to escape his devouring authority. The system flashed warning messages rapidly across his vision.

The Shepherd roared again and smashed Kael against the ground a second time. Bones cracked in Kael's chest, pain exploding through his ribs as blood spilled from his mouth.

"You… will… not… take it!"

Its voice echoed through the cavern like thunder.

Behind them the battlefield had descended into chaos.

The moment the Chimera Core began destabilizing, the herd lost its perfect coordination. Bone wolves snapped wildly at anything nearby. Mutated lizards clawed at each other in confusion. Massive insectoid predators skittered across the cavern walls before diving randomly into the fighting.

Uzo stood near the center of the chamber, hammer rising and falling in brutal arcs as he smashed creatures away from the others. A bone wolf leapt toward him and sank its fangs deep into his shoulder.

Uzo roared and grabbed the creature's jaw with both hands.

With a violent twist, he tore the beast's head sideways until its neck snapped.

"Kael!" he shouted hoarsely, blood pouring down his arm. "Finish it already!"

Zara crashed down beside him moments later, her wings slamming into a charging lizard and knocking it sideways. Her sword flashed upward and pierced through the creature's skull before she kicked the corpse off her blade.

Her wings were streaked with blood now, feathers bent and torn from repeated clashes.

Across the battlefield Jide was barely holding the defensive line. His golden orbs spun around him rapidly, forming shimmering barriers that blocked lunging beasts from reaching Lina.

The strain showed clearly on his face.

Sweat poured down his temples.

One of the orbs shattered under a powerful impact, forcing him to summon another immediately.

"Kael!" Jide yelled across the cavern. "If you're going to win this fight, do it now!"

Lina knelt near the wall, one hand pressed against the cold concrete as she pulled echoes from the bunker itself. Ghostly soldiers flickered into existence beside her, rifles blazing with spectral bullets that tore through the attacking beasts.

But the strain was pushing her too far.

Blood trickled from her nose as another echo formed beside her.

Back in the center of the battlefield, the Shepherd tightened its grip on Kael's throat and lifted him higher.

"You think… devouring makes you stronger?" it growled.

The bone staff rose high above its head.

"Then die with it!"

The weapon came crashing down toward Kael's skull.

Time fractured.

Kael's vision shifted as Temporal Step activated instinctively.

For half a second reality skipped.

The staff smashed into empty ground.

Kael reappeared behind the Shepherd, still gripping the Chimera Core as the devour surged forward again.

[Devour Progress]

The Shepherd staggered slightly as its core weakened.

Rage exploded in its glowing eyes.

"If I cannot control the herd… then I will become the herd!"

It slammed its bone staff into the ground.

The sound echoed like a thunderclap.

All across the battlefield the bones of dead beasts began to rise.

Ribs.

Skulls.

Spines.

Thousands of fragments lifted into the air and shot toward the Shepherd's body.

They struck with violent force, embedding themselves into its flesh and armor.

Bone fused with muscle.

Skeleton fragments layered across its body.

Its size began to grow.

Four meters became five.

Five became six.

Additional limbs formed from fused skeletons, stretching outward from its back and shoulders like grotesque branches.

Its body expanded into something monstrous.

A titan of bone and flesh.

The system flared again.

[Bone Shepherd – Titan Form]

The transformation finished with a deafening roar.

The Shepherd towered over the battlefield now, its massive frame covered in jagged bone armor while dozens of skulls were embedded across its chest and shoulders.

Kael was still clinging to its chest, devouring the core as the creature's body convulsed.

"You… parasite!" the Shepherd bellowed.

It slammed its massive fist into Kael's body.

The blow launched him across the cavern.

Kael crashed through a broken concrete pillar and skidded across the ground, leaving a long smear of blood behind him.

The Chimera Core was still in his hand.

But the Shepherd had grown stronger again.

Its new titan form loomed above the battlefield like a walking mountain of bone.

Around them the herd had completely lost control.

Mutated beasts attacked each other in blind fury. Some turned on the Shepherd itself, clawing at its legs before being crushed beneath its massive feet.

The cavern had become pure madness.

Kael slowly pushed himself up from the ground.

His ribs screamed in pain.

His vision blurred for a moment before the system flashed again.

[Major Devour Complete]

Strength surged through his body.

His bones hardened.

Crimson energy pulsed beneath his skin.

The Shepherd stomped forward, its titan form shaking the cavern floor.

"You steal power from monsters," it growled.

"You devour and devour and pretend you are something greater."

Its massive arm swung downward.

Kael vanished with another Temporal Step.

He reappeared several meters away, breathing hard.

"You think devouring makes you a king?" the Shepherd roared.

Kael wiped blood from his mouth and looked up at the towering creature.

"A king?" he repeated quietly.

For a moment he actually laughed.

"Heheh…"

It wasn't a proud laugh.

It sounded tired.

"I never asked for this."

The Shepherd paused.

Kael slowly stood upright despite the pain running through his body.

"I never wanted this power," he continued.

His eyes drifted across the battlefield.

His injured teammates.

The ruined bunker.

The piles of dead monsters.

"I never wanted monsters."

His gaze returned to the Shepherd.

"But the world doesn't care what we want."

Crimson energy flared around his claws.

"So if something or someone like you stands in my way…"

His voice hardened.

"I will devour them all."

Kael moved.

He sprinted straight toward the titan.

The Shepherd roared and swung its massive bone-covered arm.

Kael jumped onto the limb mid-swing, claws digging into the bone armor as he ran along its length.

The titan tried to shake him off.

Kael leapt upward.

He landed on the creature's shoulder and climbed higher, dodging snapping bone spikes as he pushed toward its head.

The Shepherd reached up with another arm to grab him.

Kael vanished again with Temporal Step.

He reappeared on the titan's skull.

The Shepherd roared in fury, thrashing violently as Kael drove his claws deep into the bone plating.

Cracks spread across the surface.

He climbed higher until his hand finally touched the creature's head.

The Hunger Voice spoke immediately.

Wait.

Don't just kill it.

Kael hesitated.

Consume the memories.

Learn.

His fingers pressed harder into the Shepherd's skull.

The devour began again.

[Mnemo-Devour Activated]

[Target: Shepherd Apostle]

[Memory Consumption Initiated]

Visions exploded inside Kael's mind.

He saw the bunker years ago.

Scientists running experiments.

Mutated beasts screaming inside containment tanks.

Then darkness spreading across the world.

The Herald's influence.

The Shepherd rising from failed experiments.

Beasts gathering around him.

A herd forming.

And something else.

Something deeper.

Something still moving beneath the earth.

The memory devour ended.

The Shepherd screamed again.

Kael drove his claws deeper into the skull.

Then he devoured.

Life force drained from the titan's body as crimson energy surged through Kael's veins.

The Shepherd's roars weakened.

Its massive body began collapsing.

Finally Kael ripped his claws free.

The titan of bone and flesh crashed to the ground with a thunderous impact that shook the entire cavern.

Silence slowly spread across the battlefield.

The surviving beasts backed away nervously.

Kael stood atop the Shepherd's corpse, breathing heavily.

A final system message appeared before him.

[Apostle Candidate Eliminated]

[Authority Increase +18.4%]

The bunker fell quiet.

And for the first time since entering it…

The monsters were afraid of him.
