The grinding metal doors continued to open slowly, their rusted edges screaming against the rails as if the bunker itself was protesting what was about to walk through. The cavernous chamber beyond remained dim, the weak emergency lights barely reaching the far walls, but the sound that came from inside was unmistakable.
Footsteps.
Heavy.
Measured.
Each one echoed across the concrete floor like a slow drumbeat.
The thousands of mutated beasts filling the cavern shifted uneasily. Bone wolves lowered their heads. Insectoid creatures clicked their limbs nervously. Even the towering lizard-like predators that had been stalking along the edges of the chamber suddenly went still.
The herd was reacting to its master.
Kael stood at the front of the team, crimson-silver veins faintly glowing beneath the surface of his skin. His eyes narrowed as he stared into the darkness beyond the gate.
Then the figure emerged.
It stepped into the dim red glow of the emergency lights, and the entire chamber seemed to grow heavier.
The creature was enormous, easily four meters tall, its body shaped roughly like a man but twisted by layers of grotesque mutation. Thick bone plates covered its torso like armor that had grown directly from flesh. Jagged ribs curved outward along its sides, forming natural spikes that scraped together when it moved.
Its spine extended up the back of its neck like a crown of jagged ivory.
In one massive hand it held a staff built from fused skeletons. Vertebrae formed the shaft while skulls had been merged into the head of the weapon, their hollow eye sockets staring blindly at the world.
But the most disturbing thing about the creature was its eyes.
They glowed faint red.
Not with rage.
With control.
A system alert flickered briefly in Kael's vision.

Behind Kael, Uzo exhaled slowly. "Yeah… that thing's definitely the boss."
The creature stopped several meters away from the entrance. Its red gaze moved across the battlefield slowly, observing the scattered bones, the corpses of beasts, and finally the group of humans standing in its territory.
Then it spoke.
Its voice sounded like bones grinding together beneath heavy stone.
"You come into my herd."
The creatures surrounding the team growled in response to the sound of their master's voice.
"You kill what belongs to me."
The Shepherd lifted its bone staff slightly and tapped it once against the concrete floor.
That small movement was all the signal the herd needed.
The cavern exploded into motion.
Bone wolves lunged forward with snarling jaws. Crawling lizards burst from the sides of the chamber. Massive insect-like predators skittered across the ceiling before dropping into the middle of the battlefield.
Uzo stepped forward with a roar.
"Alright then!"
His hammer swung in a brutal arc that smashed a charging wolf into the ground so hard the creature's skull collapsed like wet clay. Before the body had even finished sliding across the floor, Uzo grabbed another beast by the leg and hurled it into a cluster of incoming predators.
The impact scattered them like bowling pins.
Zara shot upward into the air the moment the fight began. Her wings spread wide as she beat them powerfully, lifting herself above the swarm of creatures. From the air she dove down in sharp, precise strikes, her blade flashing again and again as she cut through enemies with ruthless efficiency.
One bone wolf leapt up toward her mid-dive, jaws snapping toward her throat. Zara twisted her body sideways in the air and drove her sword downward, piercing straight through the creature's skull before ripping the weapon free as she landed.
Jide moved toward the center of the group, golden orbs swirling rapidly around his body like miniature suns. One expanded into a shimmering barrier that blocked three lunging beasts from reaching Lina. Another orb shot forward like a cannonball and detonated against a charging lizard, blasting it backward across the floor.
Lina placed one hand against the concrete wall behind her.
Her silver chain pulsed once.
Echoes answered.
Ghostly figures began appearing around the battlefield as she pulled fragments of memory from the bunker itself. The translucent image of an old soldier formed beside her, raising a rifle made of faint blue light. Another echo appeared moments later, holding a riot shield that shimmered like mist.
The echoes joined the battle instantly, striking at the creatures alongside the living fighters.
But Lina's breathing grew heavier with each summon.
Kael barely noticed the chaos unfolding around him.
His focus remained on the towering creature standing calmly in front of the opened gate.
The Shepherd watched him.
For a moment neither of them moved.
Then the creature spoke again.
"You."
Its red eyes narrowed slightly.
"You are the devourer"
Kael stepped forward slowly, crimson energy flickering along the edges of his claws.
The Shepherd tapped its staff against the floor again.
The beasts surrounding Kael immediately stopped.
One by one they stepped backward, forming a wide circle around the two figures standing in the center of the cavern.
"The herd will kill the rest," the creature said calmly.
Its gaze never left Kael.
"You fight me."
Kael didn't bother answering.
He simply moved.
His body blurred for a fraction of a second as Temporal Step activated.
The world skipped.
He appeared beside the Shepherd with claws already slashing toward its throat.
The bone staff rose instantly.
Metal screamed as claw met bone.
The impact sent a shockwave through the chamber that rattled the hanging lights overhead.
The Shepherd moved with terrifying speed for something so massive. Its staff swung downward in a crushing arc.
Kael jumped backward just in time.
The weapon struck the floor where he had been standing.
Concrete exploded outward in a violent burst of debris.
The Hunger Voice stirred inside Kael's mind.
Strong prey.
Careful.
Kael lunged again.
Crimson Dominion answered his will as blood soaked into the battlefield rose from the ground in jagged spikes. Dozens of crimson spears erupted beneath the Shepherd's feet.
The creature responded by slamming its staff down once more.
Bones scattered across the battlefield suddenly lifted into the air.
They spun around the Shepherd like a violent storm.
The crimson spikes shattered instantly as bone fragments smashed through them.
A moment later the bones reformed.
Spears.
Hundreds of them.
A warning message flashed before Kael's eyes.

[Bone Manipulation Field Active]
The spears launched.
Kael dodged the first wave with another Temporal Step, slipping through a gap in the storm as the weapons slammed into the walls behind him.
The second wave came faster.
One spear pierced his side.
Another slammed into his shoulder.
The impact threw him across the cavern.
His body crashed into a concrete pillar hard enough to crack the surface.
Pain exploded through his chest.
The Shepherd began walking toward him slowly.
Behind them the rest of the battlefield raged on. Uzo's hammer continued smashing beasts apart while Zara dove through the air like a hunting hawk. Jide's golden orbs flashed repeatedly as he struggled to hold the defensive line.
But Kael barely noticed any of it.
The Shepherd reached him.
Without hesitation the creature drove its foot down onto Kael's chest.
Bone cracked.
Kael coughed blood.
"You devour monsters," the Shepherd said quietly.
The pressure increased.
"You steal their strength."
Kael tried to push the creature's leg away, but the Shepherd was too strong.
"And you think this makes you powerful."
The bone staff lowered slowly until the cold skull-covered head of the weapon pressed against Kael's throat.
"You do not understand the power inside you."
The creature leaned closer.
"You cannot control the hunger that drives you."
Its red eyes burned with contempt.
"And you believe this pathetic strength can challenge the Herald."
The Shepherd pressed down harder.
Kael felt another rib break.
"You are no king."
The staff lifted slightly.
"You are food."
A system message suddenly flashed across Kael's vision.

The Hunger Voice spoke immediately.
Eat it.
The Shepherd raised its staff for the final strike.
Kael moved.
His claws shot forward and slammed directly into the creature's chest.
Bone armor cracked.
The Shepherd roared in shock as Kael's hand plunged deeper into the opening.
His fingers closed around something alive.
A pulsing mass of flesh and bone.
The Chimera Core.
A new message exploded across his vision.

Blood poured across the battlefield as the devour struggle began.
The cavern trembled.
And for the first time since the battle began…
The Shepherd screamed.
