Chapter 56 - Chapter 55: The watching Army

The guards on the wall leaned forward as the sound rolled across the dark land outside the compound.

It came slowly at first, like loose stones being pushed across the ground. Then the sound grew thicker, spreading across the night until it felt like the entire land beyond the walls was moving.

Torches lifted along the wooden towers.

Shadows stretched over the dirt yard as fighters rushed toward the walls with weapons in hand. Boots pounded against the ground while the alarm bell continued ringing.

Uzo reached the ladder first and climbed up quickly, pulling himself onto the top of the wall with a grunt. He expected chaos the moment he looked outside.

Instead he froze.

The land beyond the compound was full of shapes.

Hundreds of them.

Pale bones stood scattered across the open field and broken streets. Some were human skeletons wearing scraps of armor that had rusted into dark patches. Others were larger shapes twisted from the bodies of dead beasts. Long ribs stuck out of rotting hides. Crooked skulls pointed toward the compound like silent watchers.

They were everywhere.

And none of them were moving .

Uzo blinked once and leaned over the wall, staring harder as if he expected them to suddenly charge.

Nothing happened.

Behind him, Lina climbed up onto the wall beside him while Zara landed lightly on the wooden platform, her wings folding behind her back. Jide followed last, moving with his usual steady calm.

They all looked out at the same sight.

A field of bones standing under the moonlight.

Waiting.

Uzo scratched the side of his face slowly.

"Well… that's not normal."

Jide rested his hands on the top of the wooden wall and studied the undead army with quiet focus. His eyes moved across the field, counting shapes, looking at distance and spacing.

"They are not attacking," he said.

Lina kept her gaze on the nearest skeleton standing only a short distance away. The skull faced the compound directly, empty eye sockets staring toward the wall.

"They are watching," she said quietly.

Nyra stepped onto the wall a moment later. She didn't hurry. Her eyes moved across the field once before settling calmly on the silent army.

"Yes," she said.

Uzo glanced at her.

"That doesn't seem to bother you?"

She looked back at him.

"It should bother you."

He stared at her for a second, then looked back at the undead again.

"Yeah," he muttered. "It definitely does."

Below the wall, more fighters gathered in the yard. Some carried spears while others held bows pointed toward the darkness outside the compound. Workers who had been resting were now awake, standing together near the unfinished guild hall with worried faces.

The skeletons outside the walls still didn't move.

The night stretched slowly around the compound.

Time passed.

No attack came.

A cold wind moved across the land, pushing dust through the broken streets and over the scattered bones lying on the ground. The undead army remained standing under the moonlight without a single step forward.

Uzo shifted his weight on the wall.

"This is starting to feel creepy," he said.

Zara leaned slightly forward, watching a large beast skeleton standing farther out in the field. Its skull was massive, long horns curving upward from its head.

"Maybe they really are waiting for something," she said.

Jide nodded faintly.

"That's possible."

Lina kept her eyes on the army.

"Or someone."

Nyra didn't respond.

She simply watched the field with quiet focus.

Hours passed like that.

Guards rotated positions on the walls while fighters kept their weapons ready. No one wanted to relax while the undead stood outside the compound.

Uzo eventually sat down on the wooden platform, resting his back against one of the posts.

"If they were going to attack," he said, "they probably would have done it by now."

Jide didn't look away from the field.

"Probably."

Uzo looked at him.

"That's not comforting."

Jide allowed the faintest smile.

"It wasn't meant to be."

The night grew colder as time passed. The moon moved slowly across the sky, its pale light falling over the silent field of bones.

Near the middle of the night, one skeleton shifted slightly.

Its skull turned a few degrees to the side before facing forward again.

The movement was small.

But everyone on the wall noticed it.

Uzo rubbed the back of his neck.

"Alright," he said quietly. "I officially hate this."

Lina remained still.

"Stay ready."

The army did not move again after that.

The long hours of darkness continued while the compound waited.

Eventually the eastern sky began to lighten.

A faint gray glow spread slowly over the horizon as morning approached.

The first thin line of sunlight appeared above the broken land.

And then the skeletons moved.

Not toward the compound.

Away from it.

The nearest skeleton turned slowly and began walking across the field. Others followed moments later. Bones shifted together with the same dry sound that had echoed through the night.

Hundreds of them began moving at once, marching across the ruined land toward the north.

Just a slow, steady march.

Uzo stood up again and watched them leave.

"That's it?" he said.

Zara folded her arms as she watched the retreating army.

"They're leaving."

Lina's eyes followed the movement of the skeletons disappearing into the distance.

"Why come all this way just to stand there?" she asked.

Nyra answered quietly.

"He wanted to see you."

Uzo glanced at her.

"He?"

Nyra didn't elaborate.

The last of the undead disappeared over the distant rise as the sun climbed higher into the sky.

The field beyond the compound became empty again.

Only scattered dust and broken ground remained where the army had stood.

The tension inside the compound slowly loosened.

People on the walls began climbing down while guards resumed normal patrols.

In the yard below, several fighters sat down on crates or wooden beams, exhaustion finally catching up with them after the long night.

A few injured men were already being helped toward the small medical room that had been set up near the command building. Scratches and bruises from the earlier battle were treated while others cleaned dried bone dust from their armor.

Uzo jumped down from the wall and stretched his arms with a loud groan.

"Well," he said, "that was a wonderful night."

Zara landed beside him.

"You complained the entire time."

"Because it deserved complaining."

Nearby, Lina spoke quietly with Jide while looking over a rough map spread across a wooden table.

"They moved north," she said.

Jide nodded.

"That direction leads deeper into the old territories."

Nyra stood a short distance away, watching the compound quietly.

After a moment she turned and began walking toward the gate.

Uzo noticed her leaving and frowned.

"Hey."

She stopped but didn't turn around.

Uzo walked over and stepped in front of the gate, folding his arms.

"You came here in the middle of the day," he said. "Warned us about skeletons. Fought with us. Then a whole army shows up outside our walls."

He gestured toward the empty field.

"And now you're just leaving?"

"Yes," Nyra said calmly.

Uzo tilted his head.

"You know that's suspicious."

Nyra looked at him.

For a brief moment the air around them seemed to grow heavier.

A quiet pressure spread outward from her body.

The ground beneath Uzo's boots felt suddenly heavier, like gravity had doubled for a second. A cold feeling ran down his spine while his muscles locked in place.

Nyra's eyes remained steady.

"If I wanted to harm you," she said quietly, "I would have."

The pressure vanished just as quickly as it had appeared.

Uzo exhaled slowly.

"Okay," he muttered. "Fair point."

Lina approached them then.

Her eyes met Nyra's.

"Why did you really come here?" Lina asked.

Nyra looked toward the distant land beyond the compound.

"To see Kael."

"And?"

Nyra paused for a moment before answering.

"I'll decide when he returns."

She stepped past Uzo and walked through the open gate.

No one stopped her this time.

Far to the north, deep beyond the ruined lands, a wide clearing lay hidden among dead trees and broken stone.

Bones covered the ground like pale snow.

Hundreds of skeletons gathered slowly across the clearing as the army arrived from the south.

At the center stood a tall throne built from layered skulls and curved ribs. A thin figure rested upon it, long staff balanced loosely in one skeletal hand.

Pale light flickered inside the hollow sockets of his skull.

The figure watched the army return in silence.

After a moment his head tilted slightly.

"The devourer has gathered allies," he said softly.

The clearing grew quiet again as the wind moved through the trees.
