The air changed the moment Kael stepped forward.
It wasn't just pressure anymore. It felt like something was watching—something heavy, something ancient, pressing down on everything that moved within the battlefield.
The thorns answered him.
They burst from the ground in violent waves, tearing through bone and rotting flesh as they spread outward. The sound of bodies being pierced echoed in every direction, sharp and wet, as the advancing undead were forced back.
The lich didn't move at first.
It watched.
The energy gathering disrupted
The thorns stopped just short of it, twitching slightly as if waiting for permission to strike.
Kael's eyes locked onto it.
"Move," he said, his voice low but carrying across the field.
The thorns surged again.
They shot forward in a dense cluster, aiming to impale the lich where it stood.
The creature raised its hand.
The ground responded.
A wall of bone erupted upward, thick and layered, intercepting the attack. The collision sent a dull, heavy sound through the air as thorn met bone, both forces grinding against each other.
For a moment, neither side gave way.
Then cracks began to form.
The lich tilted its head slightly, as if studying him.
"So this is what you truly are," it said softly. "Not a man… not even a monster."
Its hand moved again.
The bone wall split apart, reshaping into jagged spikes that shot forward in retaliation.
Kael didn't step back.
He raised Kōsetsu.
The blade hummed.
A single swing cut through the air, and the spikes shattered mid-flight, breaking apart into fragments before they could reach him.
The sound of the impact faded quickly.
But the tension didn't.
Behind him, Lina gasped as the pressure lifted slightly.
The whispers in her head weakened, though they didn't disappear completely.
She forced herself to look up.
Kael stood between her and the lich now.
The ground around him was no longer normal. Black thorns twisted and curled like living things, forming a jagged field that spread outward in every direction.
Jide lay beside her, still unconscious.
Her chest tightened.
She reached for him, her hands shaking as she tried to pull him away from the edge of the battlefield.
"Just hold on…" she whispered, her voice uneven. "Please… just hold on!!!"
A faint pulse of energy flickered around her as she tried to summon another echo, but it came out weaker than before.
She clenched her teeth.
Not now.
Not when they needed her.
A loud crash pulled her attention back.
Uzo pushed himself up again, his body swaying slightly as he forced himself to stand.
His left arm hung useless, blood still dripping from it, but his right hand tightened around his hammer.
"Still… standing," he muttered, his voice rough.
The horseman turned toward him.
Its mount snorted, flames flaring as it pawed at the ground, ready to charge again.
Silvar stood nearby, its breathing heavy, chest rising and falling unevenly as it steadied itself. Blood stained its fur, but its eyes were still sharp, still locked onto the enemy.
Uzo glanced at the wolf.
"Let's not lose here," he said quietly.
Silvar didn't respond.
It didn't need to.
The horseman charged.
The ground trembled under the impact of its hooves, flames trailing behind it as the halberd came down in a wide arc aimed to crush everything in its path.
This time, Uzo didn't meet it head-on.
He stepped to the side at the last moment, the weapon slamming into the ground beside him with a heavy boom that cracked the earth open.
Silvar moved with him.
The wolf darted in low, its claws tearing into the horse's leg with a sharp, ripping sound.
The creature didn't react like a normal beast.
It didn't stumble.
It turned.
Fast.
The halberd swung again, forcing Silvar back as sparks and flame burst from the clash.
Zara forced herself up behind them.
Her wings trembled slightly as she took to the air again, ignoring the pain that shot through her body.
"Keep it busy!" she called out.
Uzo grinned despite the situation. "That's the plan!"
He charged again.
At the center—
The lich's attention remained on Kael.
The battlefield around them had become something else entirely. The undead hesitated to approach, their movements slower, uncertain, as if the ground itself no longer welcomed them.
"You are disrupting the balance," the lich said, its tone almost thoughtful. "This is not how the cycle works."
Kael didn't respond.
He walked forward.
Each step caused the thorns to shift, the ground cracking slightly under his weight as the domain expanded further.

Kael ignored it.
The lich raised both hands now.
The battlefield answered again.
Bones scattered across the ground began to move, shaking at first, then lifting into the air as they merged together. The sound was sickening—cracks, snaps, and grinding as ribs, skulls, and limbs fused into something larger.
Something worse.
The shape grew rapidly, forming into a massive construct that loomed over the battlefield.
A giant made of bone.
It let out a low, hollow roar as it took its first step forward, the ground sinking under its weight.
Lina's breath caught.
"What… is that…"
The lich's voice followed.
"If you wish to break the rules," it said calmly, "then I will remind you of your place."
The construct moved.
Fast for its size.
Its arm swung down toward Kael, the force behind it enough to crush the ground completely.
Kael didn't dodge.
He stepped forward.
Kōsetsu rose.
The moment the blade moved, the air shifted.
A thin arc of energy cut upward, slicing through the construct's arm before it could land.
The massive limb separated cleanly, crashing to the ground with a heavy impact that sent dust and debris flying.
The construct roared again.
Kael kept walking.
Another step.
Another swing.
Each motion of his blade carved through the giant as if it wasn't even there, the white steel leaving clean, precise cuts that split the massive body apart piece by piece.
The lich watched.
Silent now.
Observing.
Calculating.
Behind him, Lina felt it.
The change.
The power coming from Kael wasn't just overwhelming—it was unstable.
Her chest tightened as she watched the ground around him crack further, the thorns growing thicker, sharper, spreading wider.
"Kael…" she whispered.
Something felt wrong.
The final strike came.
Kael stepped in close and cut upward once more, the blade passing through the core of the construct.
The giant froze.
Then it collapsed.
The entire body broke apart at once, crashing down into a pile of lifeless bone.
Silence followed.

Kael lowered his blade.
The hum didn't stop.
If anything, it grew stronger.
The red veins along Kōsetsu pulsed faster now, the glow more intense, spreading slightly along the edge as if the weapon was feeding on everything around it.
His grip tightened unconsciously.
The lich took a step back.
Just one.
"You are becoming something dangerous," it said quietly.
Kael looked at it.
For a moment, there was nothing in his expression.
Then he spoke.
"You're in my way."
The thorns reacted instantly.
They surged forward again, faster this time, sharper, more aggressive, tearing through anything that stood between them and their target.
The lich raised its hand—
But this time, it wasn't enough.
The thorns broke through its defenses.
One pierced its shoulder.
Another its side.
The creature staggered slightly as dark energy leaked from the wounds.
For the first time—
It was being pushed back.
Far behind the battlefield, the figure on the bone throne leaned forward slightly.
The faint glow in its skull flickered brighter.
"He's crossing the line," it murmured.
He sat there .
Waiting.
Watching.
The battlefield below had changed.
And this time—
It wasn't the undead in control anymore.
