BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The bright red warning lights flashed like angry eyes all down the long, dark hallway. The loud siren screamed, echoing off the stone walls.
"Eight minutes!" the computer's frantic voice called out. "The giant spear from the sky will hit the mountain in eight minutes!"
"Keep running!" Adonis shouted.
He didn't let go of Nikki's hand. They ran as fast as her human legs could carry her, going deeper and deeper into the belly of the mountain. They ran down endless flights of metal stairs, the sound of their boots ringing loudly in the empty bunker. Every time Nikki felt like she was going to trip, Adonis was right there, his strong hand keeping her perfectly steady.
"Seven minutes!" the voice warned.
They reached the very bottom. At the end of the stairs was a giant, heavy metal door painted with peeling yellow stripes. It looked like it hadn't been opened since before Nikki was even born.
