The giant red eye on the front of the massive metal city glowed brighter and brighter, like a wicked sun waking up in the dark.
Inside the small, black spaceship, Nikki stopped breathing. The dashboard screens blinked with a panicked, bright red warning.
BZZZ-ZAP!
A blinding beam of pure, burning red light shot out from the giant bully's eye. Because space is completely empty, the laser didn't make a sound as it traveled through the dark. But the very second it hit their little black ship, the noise inside the cabin was absolutely deafening.
The laser sliced right through the back of their ship like a hot knife cutting through butter. The whole cabin shook so violently that Nikki was thrown against her seatbelts. Loud sirens began to scream. Bright orange sparks showered down from the ceiling like angry rain, and the awful smell of melting plastic and burning wire filled the small room.
