Chapter 14 - Chapter: Distance

✧ Keifer ✧

London feels the same.

Cold.

That's the first thing I notice when I step out of the car.

Not the buildings.

Not the people.

Just-

the cold.

It settles into everything.

The air. The silence.

Even the way people move.

I've been here before.

More times than I can count.

But this time-

it feels different.

Or maybe-

I'm the one that's different.

I walk into the building without stopping.

No hesitation.

No second thoughts.

Because if I stop-

I'll think.

And I don't want to think.

Not about her.

Not about last night.

Not about the way she looked at him.

I push the doors open.

"Sir."

A few people greet me as I pass.

I nod once.

Nothing more.

Everything here is the same.

Structured.

Controlled.

Predictable.

Exactly how it's supposed to be.

And yet-

it feels empty.

I step into the elevator.

The doors close.

Silence.

Too much of it.

My reflection stares back at me.

Unfamiliar.

Tired.

I run a hand through my hair.

Exhale.

It's quiet enough that my thoughts catch up.

Her voice.

"You're always there..."

I shut my eyes.

Wrong memory.

Not mine.

I shouldn't be thinking about that.

But I do.

Because for the first time-

I understand it.

And it's not me.

The elevator dings.

I step out.

"Keifer."

I don't need to look.

I already know who it is.

Keigan.

He stands near the glass window, hands in his pockets.

Calm.

Like always.

I walk past him.

"Make it quick."

A quiet chuckle.

"You've changed."

"I don't have time for this."

"Clearly," he says, turning slightly.

"Since you left everything behind so easily."

My jaw tightens.

"I didn't come here to talk about that."

Keigan studies me for a moment.

Too closely.

Then-

"Good."

He tosses a file onto the table.

I don't pick it up immediately.

"Fix it," he says.

I glance at it briefly.

Business.

Legal issues.

Complicated.

Messy.

Of course.

"You dragged me here for this?"

"For this," he repeats calmly,

"and because you're involved whether you like it or not."

I don't respond.

Because arguing with him-

never goes anywhere.

Silence stretches.

Then-

he speaks again.

"You look distracted."

I scoff lightly. "You always say that."

"Not like this."

That-

makes me pause.

I don't look at him.

"Handle your part," Keigan continues.

"And don't let personal matters interfere."

My grip tightens slightly.

Personal.

I almost laugh.

If only he knew.

But I don't say anything.

Because he wouldn't understand.

No one here would.

This place-

doesn't leave room for things like that.

Feelings.

Mistakes.

Regret.

I pick up the file.

"I'll deal with it."

"Good."

I turn to leave.

"Keifer."

I stop.

"...What?"

A pause.

Then-

"Don't be late again."

I let out a quiet breath.

Not an answer.

Not a reaction.

Just-

habit.

I walk out.

✧ Later ✧

The city looks different at night.

Lights everywhere.

People moving.

Cars passing.

But it still feels-

empty.

I stand near the window, looking down.

File closed beside me.

Work done.

Efficient.

Clean.

Meaningless.

My thoughts drift.

Back to her.

Of course they do.

I rest my hand against the glass.

Cold.

Just like everything else here.

I exhale slowly.

"She moved on."

The words come out quieter this time.

Not forced.

Not bitter.

Just-

real.

And for the first time-

I don't argue with it.

I don't try to change it.

I just...

accept it.

Because maybe-

that's the only thing I can do now.
