Chapter 83 - Chapter 79: Shadows in the Dark

The villa was entirely silent, save for the rhythmic, steady breathing of the twins from the adjoining nursery. Outside, the ocean waves continued their endless, indifferent crash against the shore, but the sound no longer felt like a threat. It was just background noise, a reminder of a world that had almost tilted off its axis.

Inside the master bedroom, the lights were completely off. The heavy curtains were drawn shut, blocking out the moonlight and the memory of the white-sand beach.

Jay sat cross-legged near the edge of the king-sized mattress, her back pressed against the headboard. Her knees were pulled up to her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around them. She hadn't changed out of her clothes from the day; she was still wearing the linen shirt that was stained with a mixture of salt, sweat, and her own tears.

Beside her, Keifer sat in silence. He wasn't looking at his phone, he wasn't checking security logs, and he wasn't pacing. He was just sitting there, staring into the dark, his shoulder touching hers.

"I keep replaying it," Jay whispered, her voice cracking slightly in the quiet room. "Every single second. If I hadn't looked away. If I had just stayed focused on the tent instead of... instead of worrying about a stupid crab..."

"Jay, stop," Keifer interrupted, his voice low, steady, and heavier than usual. He turned his head toward her in the gloom, trying to catch her eyes. "Don't do that to yourself."

"How can I not?" She finally looked at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "We're parents, Keifer. Real parents. Not just playing house, not just wearing matching outfits for an aesthetic or dealing with high-society drama. Real lives are depending on us. And today... today I failed the very first test."

"You didn't fail," Keifer said fiercely, his hand moving to rest firmly on her knee. "You looked away for ten seconds because you were terrified of anything hurting them. That's not failure, Jay. That's panic. That's being human."

Jay let out a harsh, bitter breath. "That's just it. We aren't supposed to be human, are we? Look at our families. Look at the Watsons. Look at the legacy we're supposed to inherit and pass down. Perfection is the baseline. Mistakes like today? They get written down, they get judged, they get used as proof that we're too young, too broken, too messy to do this right.

"Keifer reached out, his fingers sliding up to cup her cheek, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear that had slipped down. "To hell with the legacy, Jay."

She went still at his words.

"To hell with what my family thinks, or what anyone else expects," Keifer continued, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective rasp. "You think I'm perfect? You think I haven't been terrified every single second since we found out we were having them? I look at these two tiny lives, and I feel like I'm holding glass in a hurricane. I'm scared I'm going to mess them up. I'm scared I won't be strong enough to keep the world away from them."

Jay leaned into his palm, the warmth of his skin grounding her against the cold panic that still lingered in her chest.

"We spent our whole lives trying to live up to what everyone else wanted us to be," Keifer whispered. "Section E, the estates, the expectations, the rules. But out here? In this dark room, with our babies sleeping three feet away? None of that matters. We are allowed to make mistakes. We are allowed to be scared. We just have to be scared together."

A heavy, emotional silence settled over them, but this time, it didn't feel suffocating. It felt like an unburdening.

Jay slowly uncurled her legs, shifting closer until she was tucked entirely against his side. She buried her face in the crook of his neck, breathing in the scent of him—salt, ocean air, and the comforting familiarity of the man who had run across a beach with his heart in his throat.

"I was so scared we were going to lose him," she murmured against his skin. "I was so scared I wasn't enough."

"You are more than enough," Keifer answered, his arms wrapping around her, pulling her so tight she could feel the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "And I've got you. I've got both of you. Always."

They stayed like that in the dark for hours, letting go of the ghosts of the past, the expectations of the elite, and the impossible standard of perfection. They weren't invincible. They were just Jay and Keifer. And for tonight, that was more than enough.
