Chapter 34 - The Message I Don’t Remember Writing

The door slammed shut behind us.

Not loudly.

But firmly.

Like the quiet, final click of something locking into place.

For a moment none of us moved.

The apartment-like room felt unnaturally calm compared to the ancient chamber outside. The soft lamp beside the couch continued glowing warmly, casting golden light across the wooden table and the notebook still open in Seo-yeon's hands.

A place like this should have felt comfortable.

Instead, it felt like standing inside someone else's memory.

Tae-jun broke the silence first.

"…Okay."

He slowly leaned back into the couch.

"I'm officially confused."

He pointed at the notebook.

"Future Ji-hoon apparently writes notes to Past Ji-hoon."

Then he pointed at the photographs on the wall.

"And apparently we're all friends in the future."

He paused.

"…Which honestly feels unrealistic."

Hae-in crossed her arms.

"You're assuming that's the future."

Director Kang adjusted his glasses while studying one of the photographs.

"The dates are from 2049."

"That doesn't prove it's the future," Hae-in said.

"It could be a simulation."

Tae-jun immediately stood up again.

"Oh great."

"Now we're in a simulation inside an underground archive."

"This story is getting expensive."

But no one laughed.

Because Seo-yeon hadn't moved.

She was still staring at the notebook.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she turned another page.

"What does it say?" Ara asked quietly.

Seo-yeon swallowed.

"…More messages."

"For who?"

"For us."

My chest tightened.

She slowly read the next line aloud.

| "If you found the room before the second fracture, it means the sequence changed again."

Tae-jun blinked.

"…Sequence?"

Director Kang frowned.

"That sounds like a timeline correction."

Seo-yeon nodded slowly.

"That's exactly what it sounds like."

I stepped closer to the table.

She hesitated.

Then continued.

| "The Archive is not protecting the rings."

Everyone froze.

Tae-jun looked around nervously.

"…Then what is it protecting?"

Seo-yeon turned the page.

And read the next sentence.

Her voice dropped almost to a whisper.

| "It's protecting the reset point."

Silence filled the room.

Not the comfortable kind.

The heavy kind.

The kind that makes your ears ring.

Tae-jun rubbed his temples.

"…I'm sorry."

"I need a moment."

He walked in a slow circle around the couch.

"Let me process this."

He stopped dramatically.

"You're telling me this underground ancient place isn't guarding magical jewelry."

Hae-in raised an eyebrow.

"…Correct."

Tae-jun pointed upward.

"It's guarding a reset button for the universe?"

Director Kang didn't answer immediately.

But his expression had grown much more serious.

"That would explain the anomalies."

Ara looked toward him.

"What anomalies?"

He gestured toward the walls.

"The architecture."

"The energy signatures."

"The fact that a modern apartment exists inside a sealed chamber built centuries ago."

Tae-jun blinked.

"…You're saying this place is outside normal time."

Director Kang nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The room suddenly felt colder.

I looked down at the notebook again.

My handwriting stared back at me from the pages.

But I had never written this.

At least… not in this life.

Seo-yeon turned another page.

"…There's more."

"What now?" Tae-jun asked cautiously.

She read silently for a moment.

Then looked at me.

"…Ji-hoon."

"What?"

"You wrote a warning."

My stomach tightened.

"What warning?"

She slowly read it aloud.

| "Do not trust the Observer."

The words hung in the air.

We all immediately thought of the same person.

The stranger who had just left the chamber.

Tae-jun groaned.

"…Of course."

"Why is it always the mysterious guy with dramatic entrances?"

Ara frowned.

"But he didn't seem hostile."

Hae-in nodded.

"He could have attacked us."

"He didn't."

Seo-yeon looked back at the notebook.

"Future Ji-hoon disagrees."

Tae-jun raised a hand.

"Let's pause here."

He pointed at me.

"I feel like we're ignoring the bigger problem."

Everyone looked at him.

"You wrote this."

He tapped the notebook.

"You."

"Future you."

"Which means two possibilities."

He raised one finger.

"Either time travel exists."

Another finger.

"Or you're secretly a genius who planned everything."

He paused.

"…And I don't want to offend you, but the second option seems unlikely."

"Thank you again."

But Tae-jun wasn't finished.

"There's a third possibility."

Everyone looked at him again.

He pointed at the photographs on the wall.

"…We've been here before."

The room went silent again.

Because deep down… we had all started thinking the same thing.

Seo-yeon slowly walked toward the photographs.

One of them showed all seven of us standing on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

The wind pushed through our hair.

We were smiling.

Relaxed.

Like old friends.

Like people who had survived something together.

The date beneath it read:

August 17, 2049

Tae-jun leaned closer.

"…Why am I holding a fishing rod?"

Hae-in frowned.

"You don't even like fishing."

"Exactly."

He pointed at the photo.

"Future me clearly made some bad life choices."

But my eyes were focused on something else.

The background.

The ocean.

The cliffs.

I recognized the place.

"…Busan."

Director Kang looked at me.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

Seo-yeon turned toward me slowly.

"Have you ever been there?"

"No."

"But I know that coastline."

Ara studied the photograph carefully.

"Maybe it's from the previous cycle."

The word made the room feel heavier.

Previous cycle.

The stranger had said it too.

And now this notebook was confirming it.

We had done this before.

The door suddenly clicked.

Everyone turned instantly.

The entrance we came through hadn't opened.

But a different door had appeared on the opposite side of the room.

It looked like a simple wooden hallway door.

Plain.

Ordinary.

Except it definitely hadn't been there five seconds ago.

Tae-jun stared at it.

"…I don't like this house."

Hae-in nodded.

"Agreed."

Director Kang stepped closer to the door.

"The architecture is changing."

Ara frowned.

"That means the Archive is reacting to us."

Seo-yeon looked back at the notebook.

"There's one more line."

"What does it say?" I asked.

She read it slowly.

|"When the door appears, don't open it immediately."

Everyone looked at the new door.

Then back at Seo-yeon.

Tae-jun blinked.

"…Well that's extremely suspicious."

I crossed my arms.

"What's the rest?"

Seo-yeon swallowed.

|"Because what comes through it isn't the enemy."

The lights flickered.

The door handle slowly turned.

Click.

Tae-jun whispered,

"…Please tell me the note also says what it is."

Seo-yeon turned the page.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"…It says it's you."

My heart skipped.

"What?"

The door creaked open.

And someone stepped inside.

For a moment no one spoke.

Because the person standing in the doorway looked exactly like me.

Same face.

Same height.

Same eyes.

But older.

Maybe ten years older.

His expression was calm.

Tired.

Like someone who had been running for a long time.

Tae-jun slowly sat back down on the couch.

"…Alright."

"I quit."

The older version of me looked around the room once.

Then his eyes stopped on me.

And he sighed.

"…Good."

"You found the room earlier this time."

My voice came out before I could stop it.

"…Who are you?"

He smiled faintly.

"I was hoping you wouldn't ask that."

Then he walked forward.

And said something that made every nerve in my body freeze.

"Because if I have to explain everything…"

He glanced at the notebook on the table.

"…it means we already failed again."
