Chapter 35 - The Man Who Shouldn’t Exist

No one spoke.

No one moved.

The man standing in the doorway looked exactly like me.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly.

Same eyes.

Same jawline.

Same scar near the eyebrow that I got when I fell off a bike when I was ten.

But there was something different about him.

His posture.

His expression.

The way he stood like someone who had carried too many responsibilities for too long.

He looked… tired.

Older.

Like time had pressed heavily on him.

Tae-jun slowly leaned back into the couch.

"…Okay."

He raised one hand.

"I just want to confirm something before my brain shuts down."

No one answered.

He pointed at the stranger.

"That is Ji-hoon."

Then he pointed at me.

"And that is also Ji-hoon."

He nodded slowly.

"Good."

"Just making sure the universe is still broken."

The older version of me rubbed the back of his neck.

"Honestly, that's a fair reaction."

Hae-in stepped forward cautiously.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at her calmly.

"I think you already know the answer."

Ara frowned.

"That's not possible."

The man sighed softly.

"I wish you were right."

Seo-yeon hadn't moved.

She was still standing beside the table, the notebook open in her hands.

Her eyes moved slowly between the two of us.

"…Future Ji-hoon."

The man nodded slightly.

"Yes."

The room went silent again.

Tae-jun blinked.

"…I hate that sentence."

Future Ji-hoon looked around the strange apartment room.

Then at the photographs on the wall.

Then at the notebook.

His expression softened slightly.

"…So the room appeared earlier this time."

Director Kang stepped forward.

"You've been here before."

Future Ji-hoon smiled faintly.

"More times than I'd like."

That answer made the air feel heavier.

Ara crossed her arms.

"You're saying this has happened multiple times?"

"Yes."

"How many?"

Future Ji-hoon hesitated.

"…Enough that I stopped counting."

Tae-jun groaned loudly.

"Oh fantastic."

"We're in a time loop."

Hae-in frowned.

"Not necessarily."

Future Ji-hoon nodded.

"She's right."

"It's worse than that."

Tae-jun stared at him.

"…That's not comforting."

I finally stepped closer.

My eyes locked onto his.

If he really was me… then somewhere deep inside my mind there should have been recognition.

But there wasn't.

Just confusion.

And an uneasy feeling in my chest.

"You wrote that notebook."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Future Ji-hoon glanced at the pages.

"Because every time the timeline resets… you forget."

Seo-yeon slowly closed the notebook.

"So you leave messages."

"Yes."

"For us?"

"For you."

He looked at me again.

"You're the only one who can change what happens."

I exhaled slowly.

"And what exactly happens?"

Future Ji-hoon didn't answer immediately.

His eyes drifted toward the photographs on the wall again.

Especially the one of all of us standing on the cliff near the ocean.

"…We make it to the end."

Tae-jun leaned forward.

"End of what?"

Future Ji-hoon's voice became quieter.

"The end of the sequence."

Director Kang frowned.

"And then?"

Future Ji-hoon's eyes darkened slightly.

"…Then the world breaks."

Silence returned to the room.

The lamp flickered softly beside the couch.

Seo-yeon spoke first.

"What causes it?"

Future Ji-hoon looked at her.

"You do."

Everyone froze.

Ara stepped forward immediately.

"Explain that."

Future Ji-hoon raised a hand.

"I didn't mean it like that."

Seo-yeon's voice remained calm, but her eyes sharpened.

"Then explain it properly."

Future Ji-hoon nodded.

"The moment we reach the final location… something activates."

"The rings?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"The Archive."

Director Kang's eyes widened.

"…The reset point."

Future Ji-hoon nodded again.

"Yes."

"The Archive was never meant to protect the rings."

Tae-jun pointed dramatically.

"I knew it!"

"Okay actually I didn't but I'm glad someone said it."

Future Ji-hoon continued.

"It protects the reset mechanism."

Ara frowned.

"A failsafe."

"Yes."

"For what?" Hae-in asked.

Future Ji-hoon looked at me.

"For when the guardians fail."

My stomach tightened.

"And we fail."

"Every time."

The room grew quiet again.

Seo-yeon slowly walked toward the photographs.

Her fingers brushed the frame of the cliff picture.

"So what changes this time?"

Future Ji-hoon sighed softly.

"That's the problem."

He pointed at the door we came through.

"This room."

Ara looked confused.

"The apartment?"

"Yes."

"It wasn't supposed to appear yet."

Director Kang adjusted his glasses.

"The sequence changed."

Future Ji-hoon nodded.

"Exactly."

Tae-jun leaned back again.

"…And that's bad?"

Future Ji-hoon smiled faintly.

"It depends."

"On what?"

"On whether the change came from us."

He paused.

"…or from the Observer."

Everyone looked at him.

Ara's voice hardened.

"The man who visited the chamber."

"Yes."

"You don't trust him."

Future Ji-hoon shook his head slowly.

"No."

"He remembers every cycle."

"That means he remembers every failure."

Seo-yeon frowned.

"So why warn us?"

Future Ji-hoon looked toward the closed doorway behind him.

"Because he's trying to change something too."

Tae-jun groaned.

"Great."

"So we have two time travelers with mysterious agendas."

He pointed between us.

"Future Ji-hoon and mysterious Observer guy."

Then he pointed at himself.

"And I'm just a normal person stuck in the middle."

Future Ji-hoon looked at him.

"You're not normal."

Tae-jun blinked.

"…That's the worst sentence you could have said."

Future Ji-hoon smiled slightly.

But then his expression changed.

Serious again.

He looked at me carefully.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"You're not supposed to remember anything yet."

"…Okay?"

"But the fact that you found this room early means something inside your mind is already waking up."

A strange chill moved through my chest.

"What kind of something?"

Future Ji-hoon hesitated.

Then he said quietly,

"The memory that ended the world."

The words hung in the air.

Before anyone could react—

The lights flickered violently.

The walls of the apartment room trembled slightly.

Director Kang looked up immediately.

"That shouldn't be happening."

Future Ji-hoon turned toward the ceiling slowly.

"…He found us."

Ara frowned.

"Who?"

Future Ji-hoon didn't answer.

Instead he looked straight at me.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"We're out of time."

The room shook again.

And somewhere beyond the walls of the Archive—

Something enormous moved.

Tae-jun grabbed the couch.

"…Please tell me that's an earthquake."

Future Ji-hoon shook his head.

"No."

His eyes turned toward the door.

"That's the Observer."

And then the lights went out.
