Chapter 78 - Chapter 78

THE CAGE

The echoes of the boardroom doors slamming shut still rang in Kei's ears. She didn't stay to celebrate with Arthur Sterling or discuss "optics" with the board.

She ignored Yumi's frantic reminders about a press release and followed Fay toward the surgical wing.

She found her in a small, windowless supply closet the only place in the massive hospital where the cameras and the prying eyes of the staff couldn't reach.

Fay was leaning against a stack of sterile gown boxes, her breathing shallow and ragged.

THE APOLOGY

"Fay,"

Kei said, stepping inside and closing the door.

The space was so small their shoulders almost touched.

"I'm sorry. I had no idea he was going to do that. I never wanted to trap you."

Fay let out a sharp, jagged laugh.

"Didn't you? You came back with your billions and your influence, Kei. You turned my quiet life into a tabloid headline. My father is just doing what you started using me as a pawn in a bigger game."

"That's not true,"

Kei stepped closer, the scent of antiseptic and Fay's familiar soap filling the cramped space.

"I made a mistake with the balloons and the banner. I was desperate. But I would never collaborate with your father to force you into a spotlight you don't want."

"But you're going to go along with it, aren't you?" Fay looked up, her eyes red-rimmed. "Because it helps the Luz Group. Because it makes the public love you. You're the 'Hero CEO' who saved the hospital. And I'm just the prize you won at the end of the movie."

THE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

Kei reached out, her hands hovering near Fay's waist, aching to pull her in but terrified of the rejection.

"I'll pull the funding,"

Kei whispered.

"If this is too much, if it hurts you too much, I'll cancel the endowment. I'll take the PR hit. I'll let the stock crash. Just say the word."

Fay looked at her, truly looked at her, and for a moment, the bitterness flickered.

"You can't do that. Those kids need that wing. The equipment is failing, Kei. If you pull out now, the board will blame me. My father will make sure I never head a department again."

She let out a long, shaky breath, her forehead dropping onto Kei's shoulder. It wasn't a hug of affection; it was a collapse of pure exhaustion.

"You've made it so I have to love you in public just so I can keep my job in private,"

Fay choked out.

"Do you have any idea how much I hate you for that?"

THE SILENT

Kei wrapped her arms around Fay, holding her tightly.

She felt the weight of the "glass bridge" more than ever. It was no longer just about ten years of silence, it was about the crushing pressure of the world they now lived in.

"I'll make it as easy as I can,"

Kei promised into Fay's hair.

"The galas, the photos... I'll handle the talking. You just have to stand there. I'll protect you from the cameras, even if I have to buy the networks."

"You still think you can buy everything,"

Fay murmured, but she didn't pull away. She stayed there, anchored to the woman she loved and resented in equal measure, while outside the closet door, the world waited for their next "romantic" move.

Kei realized then that her apology meant nothing as long as she was still holding the checkbook. She had Fay back, but she was holding a prisoner, not a partner.
