Chapter 77 - Chapter 77

THE BOARDROOM TRAP

The boardroom at Sterling Hospital was a cathedral of glass and mahogany, smelling of expensive espresso and sterilized air.

Usually, these meetings were filled with dry talk of insurance premiums and equipment depreciation. Today, the air was charged with the electricity of a high-stakes drama.

Kei sat on one side of the long table, flanked by her lead counsel and Yumi.

Opposite her sat the hospital board a row of gray-haired men and women in tailored suits. At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, his hands steepled, a predatory smile playing on his lips.

Fay sat at the very end of the table, still in her surgical scrubs, looking like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.

 THE PERFORMANCE

"Ms. Luz" Arthur began, his voice booming with artificial warmth.

"The board has reviewed your proposal for the sixty-million-dollar endowment. It is… generous. However, in light of the recent 'public interest'"

he gestured toward a monitor displaying the viral ramen shop photo

"the board feels that a simple donation isn't enough to maximize the potential of this… partnership."

Kei narrowed her eyes.

"I'm listening, Dr. Sterling."

"We want a face for the new wing," Arthur continued.

"The 'Luz-Sterling Oncology Center.' We want a series of joint press conferences. A televised gala. We want the public to see the synergy between the Luz Group's innovation and Sterling Hospital care. In short, we want the romance to be the brand."

Fay's pen snapped in her hand. The sound echoed in the quiet room.

"You want us to perform?" Fay asked, her voice trembling with suppressed rage.

"You want me to stand on a stage and pretend my personal life is a marketing campaign for a building?"

"It's for the patients, Fay," her father said smoothly, not even looking at her.

"The public is obsessed with this story. If you and Ms. Luz are seen together, donations will quadruple. We could fund the pediatric wing by Christmas. Is your 'privacy' worth more than the lives of those children?"

THE SQUEEZE

The board members nodded in unison. They weren't looking at Fay as a surgeon, they were looking at her as the romantic lead in a blockbuster that was currently printing money.

Arthur turned his gaze to Kei.

"And you, Kei. The Luz Group's stock is up twelve percent. Your shareholders are delighted. This 'romance' is the best PR move your company has ever seen. Surely, you see the logic in making this… official?"

Kei looked at Fay. Fay was staring at the table, her knuckles white. Kei realized the trap her mother had hinted at. By being "loud," she had given Arthur Sterling the tools to cage them both.

If Kei refused, she was the "villain" who pulled the funding. If she agreed, she was complicit in exploiting Fay's pain.

"I will provide the funding," Kei said, her voice dropping into the cold, executive register that usually terrified her competitors.

"But I will not force Dr. Fay to be a 'face' for anything she doesn't consent to."

"Then the endowment is just a donation," Arthur sighed, leaning back.

"And the board may have to reconsider the naming rights and the 'synergy' tax breaks. It would be a shame for the project to be delayed because of a lack of… cooperation."

 THE RELUCTANT VOW

Fay looked up, her eyes meeting Kei's across the vast table. There was a look of profound betrayal in them, but also a grim realization.

She knew her father.

She knew he wouldn't stop until he got what he wanted.

"Fine,"

Fay said, the word sounding like a death sentence.

"Fay, you don't have to.." Kei started.

"I said fine!" Fay snapped, standing up.

"If sixty million dollars and a few fake smiles at a gala will get you people off my back and save my department, then let's do it. Let's give the public what they want."

She looked directly at her father, then at Kei.

"But don't mistake this for a reconciliation. This is a business transaction. Just like everything else in this room."

Fay marched out of the boardroom, the heavy doors swinging shut behind her.

Arthur Sterling smiled, looking back at his tablet.

"Excellent. Yumi, coordinate with our PR team. We'll schedule the first 'public appearance' for Friday."

Kei sat frozen. She had wanted Fay back, but she hadn't wanted her like this bought and paid for by a contract she never signed. She had built a bridge, but Arthur Sterling had turned it into a stage, and the lights were starting to burn.
