I stood there like a statue, my hands heavy on the small of Niamh's back as we stayed locked in that silent, electric bubble.
I could see the war going on behind those beautiful turquoise eyes, a storm of emotions swirling in the depths of her gaze as if she were torn between melting into me completely or pulling away before she lost herself.
Why was she hesitant? Was she afraid that I would reject her again like I did at the hallway after dinner the previous night?
I wouldn't reject her now. Not tonight.
Because now, for the first time since we got back together, I could tell that whatever she did next would be because it was what she truly wanted.
It wasn't a dutiful "thank you" for the dinner or the dress; it was something else, something more.
Finally, Niamh let out a muffled, frustrated sigh and buried her face against my chest.
