Alex POV
I closed the distance between us, my steps steady, deliberate. She muttered something under her breath, too low for me to catch, before ending the call. My eyes dropped to the screen just as she turned the phone over on the counter.
Don, followed by a knife emoji.
I dragged out the stool beside her and sat, the scrape of the legs against the floor.
"Want to tell me why you were so curious about our mode of transport?" I asked.
She laughed, low and easy. "I did a check-in on you and your brother. Found out you have a jet. I had a hunch, but you confirmed it with your answer."
"This was all a setup, wasn't it?"
Her brows drew together, confusion flickering across her face.
"What? Figuring out you have a jet? I don't plan to interfere with your transport, if that's what you're thinking." Her tone carried no humor, only seriousness, which left me more uncertain about her true intent.
That uncertainty was enough. I decided to hit the nail on the head.
