"Why?"
Lucian looked at me for a moment before answering. The pause wasn't long, but it stretched just enough for my curiosity to sharpen. Then a quiet chuckle left him. Not loud. Not mocking. Just amused in a way that made my suspicion deepen instead of easing. The sound stayed low in his chest, like he was entertained by something only he understood.
"I heard your stomach grumble awhile ago," he said, resting one arm casually against the steering wheel while the other remained loose near the gearshift. "Sounded like there was a fight going on in there."
I gasped.
My head snapped toward him so fast my hair brushed against my cheek.
"No you did not."
His mouth curved slightly, the corner lifting in quiet satisfaction.
"I did."
I stared at him in disbelief. My eyes narrowed as I searched his face for any sign that he might be joking. He didn't look like someone joking. His gaze stayed steady, calm, completely certain.
