Chapter 40 - Chapter-40: When Truth Circles Closer

The last day of the trip carried a strange weight.

Like everyone knew something was about to change --but no one knew what.

Christopher sat by the window during breakfast, stirring his coffee absentmindedly. Evan and Leo argued about souvenirs, but Christopher barely heard them.

His phone buzzed.

Dad calling.

He stepped aside.

"Your mother wants to meet you when you're back,"his father said without preamble ."I told her it's your choice. "

Christopher closed his eyes ." Why now?"

"Because people don't stay silent forever, " his father replied. "You didn't either. "

That wasn't an accusation. It was an understanding.

Jason finally stopped pretending.

He caught Christopher near the elevators.

"Funny how people think you're simple,"Jason said lightly. "Turns out the Hale family is anything but ."

Christopher looked at him ,calm."Money makes noise.Character doesn't. "

Jason smiled thinly ."Be careful, Chris. Some silences explode."

"Only when someone lights the fuse," Christopher replied--and walked away.

Jason watched him go ,haw tight.

By noon,Sofee's confidence had completely cracked.

She found Zia alone near the hotel garden .

"I didn't mean to hurt you,"Sofee said suddenly.

Zia looked up."You didn't. "

Sofee's voice trembled. "I just...I thought if I stayed quiet, he'd notice me ."

Zia stood slowly. "Love doesn't grow in waiting rooms,Sofee."

That was the truth.

And Sofee finally cried.

Later ,Leo sat beside Christopher on the bus ride back.

"You're Different, " Leo said quietly.

Christopher didn't deny it ."I'm tired of pretending I'm not."

Leo nodded. "I figured. "

A pause.

Then Leo added, "I'm still your friend. "

Christopher smiled at him --grateful, relieved.

The final close call came just before school drop-off.

A teacher stopped the bus abruptly. Bags shifted .Students stood.

In the confusion, Zia stumbled.

Christopher caught her instinctively--hand at her waist, steadying her.

Jason saw it.

Sofee saw it.

A few others did too .

Christopher released her immediately.

Too late .

Nothing was confirmed.

But nothing was invisible anymore.

As the bus rolled back into the school grounds ,whispers began --not loud ,not clear.

Just enough.

Zia slipped a folded note into Christopher's hand while getting down.

They're watching now.

He unfolded it slowly.

Let them,He wrote back.

They walked away in opposite directions.

But for the first time, they didn't feel alone doing it.

The secret still lived.

But it had a heartbeat now.
