Chapter 39 - Chapter-39:Too Close to Pretend

The hotel morning began like every school trip ever did--teachers yelling wake-up calls, students pretending they weren't exhausted, and chaos dressed as excitement.

Christopher leaned against the corridor railing with Evan and Leo .

"You didn't sleep, " Evan smirked.

Christopher shrugged. "Beds here are terrible."

Leo didn't comment. He just watched sofee walk past --eyes scanning the hallway a little too carefully.

During the sightseeing activity, groups were formed.

Zia ended up with her friends. Jason stayed unusually close ,volunteering to help teachers, offering to carry bags.

Too involved.

"You're hovering, " Zia said quietly when no one else was close.

Jason smiled. "Just being responsible. "

She met his gaze ." You don't need to guard me."

Jason's smile faded for a second. "I'm not guarding. I'm...checking. "

Zia didn't ask what.

She already knew.

Sofee made her move that afternoon.

She pulled Zia aside near the souvenir stalls.

"I saw Christopher leave his room last night ," she said softly.

Zia's heart skipped---but her face didn't show it.

"Lots of people did," She replied calmly.

Sofee leaned closer ." I just hope you're not the reason someone gets hurt."

Zia looked at her then--really looked .

"People get hurt when they assume, " She said ." Not when they're honest. "

Sofee stepped back,shaken .

That was her mistake.

Meanwhile, Jason stood near the hotel reception, phone pressed to his ear .

"Yes ," he said quietly. "Hale .Christopher Hale."

A pause.

Then his expression hardened.

"I see."

He hung up slowly.

Across the lobby ,Christopher laughed at something Evan said --carefree ,effortless.

Jason watched him like a puzzle finally forming a picture.

That evening, Christopher's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He stepped away from the group and answered.

"....Mom?"

Her voice was careful ." I heard you're on a trip. "

He closed his eyes ."You're keeping track again ."

"I worry, " She said ." Your stepfather says you've grown up well."

That stung more than anger.

"I didn't grow up," Christopher replied quietly. "I adapted. "

Silence.

Then she said ," When you come back...can we talk ?"

Christopher didn't answer.

He ended the call.

Zia found him minutes later near the back garden.

She didn't ask questions.

She just held his hand.

And for once ,that was enough.

From a distance, Leo saw them---hands joined briefly, then separated when footsteps approached.

He exhaled.

Sofee saw it too.

Jason definitely did.

Too many eyes were opening.

Too many lines were crossing.

That night,another folded note waited.

No matter what they think...we choose each other.

Christopher smiled faintly and wrote back.

Until the end.

The trip was no longer just a trip.

It was a turning point.
