I stood in the shadows watching the mating ceremony from a distance. I was happy for Urdon and Freda. They had earned this celebration. They had fought through hell to get here, and they deserved every moment of joy.
But I could not fully join in the festivities. Something held me back. Maybe it was the burn marks on my arm. Maybe it was the knowledge of what was buried in that cave. Maybe it was just my nature to watch and observe rather than participate.
"You should be celebrating with them," a voice said.
I turned and saw an old omega standing next to me. She was ancient with white hair and deeply lined skin. But her eyes were sharp and clear.
"I am celebrating," I said. "Just in my own way."
"By hiding in the shadows," she said. It was not really a question.
"By being cautious," I corrected. "Someone needs to stay alert even during celebrations."
