I called the meeting for early evening in my private office. Just the four of us. Freda and I. Kyran and Rex. The people I trusted most. The people who knew about the curse.
"Thank you for coming," I said when everyone was seated. "We need to talk about the full moon. About the mating rites. About security."
"Security," Rex repeated. "You think something is going to happen."
"I know something is going to happen," I said. "The curse has been building to this. Yolande has been waiting for this moment. The full moon during our mating rites. It is perfect for her. Maximum chaos. Maximum potential for destruction."
"So what do we do?" Freda asked. She was sitting close to me. Our hands were linked together.
"We prepare," I said. We doubled the guards. We set up patrols. We make sure no one is alone at any point during the ceremony."
"That is a lot of guards," Kyran said. "The pack will notice. They will ask questions."
