The sun was hot on my neck as I stood in the clearing.

 

My legs did not shake anymore. It had taken every ounce of broth and every hour of sleep Freda forced on me, but I was standing.

 

I rolled my shoulders and felt the pull of muscle. It wasn't my full strength, but it was enough to look like an Alpha again.

 

"They are coming," Rex said. He was standing to my left. He looked better too, but his eyes were still scanning the trees like he expected a ghost to jump out.

 

"I can hear them," I said.

 

The sound of heavy boots and paws hitting the dry earth grew louder. Then they broke through the brush. Viktor was in the lead. He looked like he hadn't missed a single meal during the famine.

 

He was thick and his coat was shiny, behind him were at least twenty wolves. They were all big. They were all well-fed. They looked at our small, thin group like we were a joke.

 

Viktor stopped ten feet away. He looked me up and down.
