Urdon Pov
The cellar was cold and smelled like damp earth.
I stood in front of the heavy wooden door and waited for Rex to turn the key. My chest wound gave a sharp pull when I moved, but I ignored it. I needed to see the boys. I needed to know how deep this hole went.
Rex pushed the door open. Leo, Joss, and Toby were sitting on a pile of old burlap sacks. They looked up when the light hit them. Joss wiped his eyes with his sleeve. Toby looked at his feet. Leo just stared at me. He didn't look scared anymore. He looked angry.
"Why were you at the border?" I asked.
"We were hungry," Leo said.
"Everyone is hungry," I said. "That is not a reason to talk to an Ironfang scout."
"They had meat, Urdon," Leo said. He stood up and took a step toward me. Rex moved to block him, but I held up my hand. "Real meat. Not thin soup and old bones. They had bread that wasn't hard as a rock. Viktor told the scout to tell us there is more where that came from."
