"The gate is unlatched," Silas said again. He looked at the north wall and then back at Urdon.
"You really did it," Rex said. He stepped forward and his hand was on the hilt of the knife at his belt.
"I did what I had to do so we don't all end up in the ground," Silas said.
I looked at the faces of the wolves behind him. There was Hagar and Mark and three others I had grown up with. They wouldn't look at me. They just looked at the dirt. I felt a cold knot in my stomach but I didn't let my hands shake. I took a step forward until I was standing right in front of Silas.
"You think Viktor wants you?" I asked.
"He wants the land, Freda," Silas said. "And he's willing to give us a seat at the table to get it."
"You aren't getting a seat," I said. "You're getting a leash. Do you remember what happened to the BlueMoon pack when they 'allied' with him? They aren't a pack anymore. They're just workers."
