Chapter 73 - Chapter 72 – Things That Take Root

Timeline: Four years before the main story

Age: Akira — 16

Location: Butterfly Mansion / Various Demon Slayer missions

POV: Split (Akira / Kanae & Shinobu / Corps field reports)

---

Akira

Butterfly Mansion — Recovery Wing

Akira woke to stillness.

Not silence — the soft rustle of paper screens, distant footsteps, the muted hum of life — but the absence of urgency.

His chest was bound properly now. Herbs warmed his veins, circulation steady, breathing smooth.

Total Concentration: Constant remained — but reduced, restrained, respectful of healing.

He stared at the ceiling for a long moment.

"…So this is rest," he murmured.

The door slid open.

---

Kanae & Shinobu

Shared POV

Kanae entered first, tray in hand, smile gentle and unmistakably alive.

Shinobu followed, arms crossed, eyes sharp.

"You're awake," Kanae said warmly.

"I was never unconscious," Akira replied.

Shinobu snorted. "That makes it worse."

She set the tray down with precise irritation.

"You pushed an injured body through six Hashira," she said.

"Do you have a death wish, or just poor self-preservation?"

"Calculated risk," Akira answered calmly.

Kanae laughed softly.

"Thank you," she said, bowing deeply.

Akira stiffened immediately. "Please don't."

"I will," Kanae replied, eyes clear.

"Because I'm alive to do so."

Shinobu looked away — jaw tight.

"…If you hadn't arrived," she said quietly, "I would be wearing white right now."

Akira absorbed that without flinching.

"I acted because it was correct."

Kanae smiled. "That's exactly why we're grateful."

Akira

They spoke of small things after.

Of herbs.

Of recovery timelines.

Of the mansion's patients.

Shinobu adjusted his bandages with clinical efficiency, fingers firm but careful.

"You heal fast," she noted.

"Your breathing distributes recovery unusually evenly."

"It minimizes waste," Akira replied.

She paused — then smiled faintly.

"…I'd like to study that."

"Approved," he said automatically.

Kanae laughed again.

For the first time, Akira felt something loosen in his chest.

Not pain.

Weight.

Elsewhere — Change in Motion

Corps Split POV

Northern Route — Two Weeks Later

A young slayer fired once.

The wisteria-treated round struck the demon's shoulder.

It did not kill.

But it slowed.

Long enough.

The blade finished the work.

The slayer lived.

---

Western Villages

Wisteria-coated blade edges dulled faster — but demons bled slower, staggered longer.

Teams withdrew intact.

Fatalities dropped.

---

Emergency Response Division

Smoke bombs infused with powdered wisteria dispersed at chokepoints.

Demons fled.

Slayers regrouped.

---

Field Reports — Compiled

> Demon Slayer fatality rate:

↓ Decreased by 18% in first month

↓ Decreased by 31% in high-risk zones

Butterfly Mansion

Kanae POV

Kanae read the reports at Akira's bedside.

Her hands trembled slightly.

"…You changed the tide," she whispered.

Akira did not look proud.

Only thoughtful.

"Then it was overdue," he replied.

---

Shinobu POV

Shinobu watched him sleep later — breathing steady, expression calm even in rest.

"…You're dangerous," she murmured.

"Not because you fight well."

She folded the report.

"But because you ask the right questions."

---

Akira

Evening

He sat outside later, wrapped in a light haori, watching dusk settle.

His body still hurt.

His path was still lonely.

But somewhere out there —

Slayers were coming home.

He closed his eyes.

Breathing steady.

The sun did not burn.

It nurtured.
