Timeline: Four years before the main story
Age: Akira — 16
Location: Ubuyashiki Estate, outer training grounds
POV: Split (Akira / Hashira)
---
Akira
The conversation did not end.
It merely moved.
They stood beneath bare trees now, the training yard cleared and quiet. Akira's injuries were acknowledged — ribs wrapped, shoulder stiff — and so the ground rules were simple.
No killing intent.
No pursuit.
One-on-one.
Testing. Not execution.
Akira adjusted his grip.
"I am not advocating replacement," he said evenly, returning to his earlier point. "Only expansion. Poison is already part of our doctrine."
Kanae nodded faintly.
"Wisteria is slow," Sanemi snapped. "Unreliable against Upper Ranks."
"Only because delivery is limited," Akira replied. "Distance matters. Attrition matters."
Shinjuro exhaled sharply. "Words are easy."
Akira met his gaze.
"So is doubt."
Kagaya's soft voice settled the air.
"Then let understanding replace both," he said.
"Begin."
---
First — Giyu Tomioka
Water Breathing flowed first.
Giyu moved without warning — clean, precise, mercilessly efficient.
Water Breathing, Fourth Form: Striking Tide
Akira did not counter.
He redirected.
Hinokami Kagura — Clear Blue Sky
No clash.
The water parted, pressure dissolved, heat circulating inward. Giyu's blade slid past Akira's shoulder by a hair — stopped not by force, but by timing.
Giyu disengaged immediately.
"…It's not overpowering," he said quietly.
"No," Akira replied.
"It's stabilizing."
Giyu nodded once.
---
Second — Sanemi Shinazugawa
Sanemi grinned like a wound reopening.
"Good," he said. "I don't need mercy."
Wind screamed.
Wind Breathing, Fifth Form: Cold Mountain Gale
Akira's ribs protested as he moved — pain flaring, measured, accepted.
Hinokami Kagura — Fake Rainbow
The wind cut through afterimages.
Sanemi slashed again — faster.
Too fast for a wounded body.
But not for the Sun.
Akira stepped inside the arc, blade resting against Sanemi's throat.
Sanemi froze.
"…Tch," he clicked, breath uneven.
"So that's how demons feel."
Akira stepped back immediately.
---
Third — Tengen Uzui
"No flash," Tengen said, spinning his blades.
"No rhythm."
"Understood," Akira replied.
Sound exploded.
Chains whistled. Blades rang. The air vibrated.
Akira absorbed the tempo.
Not copying — smoothing.
Hinokami Kagura — Raging Sun
Heat flooded his limbs, reinforcing damaged muscle just enough. He moved once, twice — severing rhythm without breaking flow.
Tengen stopped mid-step.
"…That's unsettling," he admitted.
"You steal momentum."
"I return it," Akira corrected. "Balanced."
---
Fourth — Shinjuro Rengoku
This one carried weight.
Flame Breathing ignited — raw, powerful, grieving.
Flame Breathing, Second Form: Rising Scorching Sun
Akira's chest tightened — not from injury.
From history.
Hinokami Kagura — Burning Bones, Summer Sun
The clash cracked stone.
Flame bent — not extinguished — redirected into cleaner motion.
Shinjuro's blade stopped trembling first.
"…So that's the difference," he said hoarsely.
"Flame burns. The sun sustains."
Akira bowed.
---
Fifth — Gyomei Himejima
Gyomei's presence alone weighed like mountains.
Chains moved. The ground shook.
Akira's injuries screamed now — shoulder burning, breath tightening.
He did not retreat.
Hinokami Kagura — Sunflower Thrust
Straight. Honest. Unyielding.
The impact was not loud.
But Gyomei stepped back.
Tears streamed freely.
"…Even wounded," Gyomei whispered, "your breath does not waver."
Akira lowered his sword.
---
Kanae Kocho
Last.
She did not draw her blade immediately.
"You're injured," she said gently.
"I am stable," Akira replied.
Flower Breathing bloomed — deceptive, precise.
Akira matched her with restraint alone.
No forms.
Just breath.
When it ended, Kanae smiled — relieved, certain.
"You're right," she said softly.
"Poison isn't weakness."
She looked to Kagaya.
"It's mercy for those who can't endure prolonged battle."
---
Conclusion
Akira knelt again, breathing steady despite the ache spreading through him.
"If firearms are unfeasible," he said calmly, "then refine coatings. Aerosols. Traps. Support tools."
No demand.
Only clarity.
Kagaya closed his eyes.
"…The Sun does not demand obedience," he said.
"It illuminates options."
He smiled.
"We will begin research."
The Hashira dispersed slowly.
None dismissed him.
None challenged him again.
---
Akira remained kneeling long after they left.
Pain finally settling in.
Earned.
Controlled.
Above him, the winter sky was clear.
And the Sun had been acknowledged.
