Chapter 38 - Misunderstood

Doctor Fenris was at his desk when hazel walked in, and she watched the blood leave his face in the span of a single breath.

Good.

She let him look. Let him take in the fact of her — standing upright, dressed, unhurried — and she watched him do the math and arrive somewhere terrified before she'd even opened her mouth.

His eyes move to the vials on the shelf behind her. Then back to her face. Then to the door, as if calculating the distance.

"The Alpha released me yesterday evening ," she said. She set nothing down. She didn't sit. "He sends for you now. Directly."

Fenris's mouth opened. "The — the Alpha—"

"Wants you. Not your notes. Not a written report." She let a pause sit between them, comfortable, unhurried. "You should go quickly. He doesn't like to wait"

He went.

Of course he went. Fenris had always been the kind of man who ran toward whoever held the leash tightest, and right now the Alpha's leash was tighter than anything Fenris thought he had on her.
