Chapter 66 - SOMETHING NOT LIKE THIS

AKAME ASSASINATION (2)

"Are you going to explain that phone call?" Germain and Blake sat down the next day to have this conversation.

"All in due time Germain, all in due time." Blake answered swinging on his chair.

"This is dangerous, falsifying a report could get anyone reprimanded… me included."

"Jeez Germain, how selfish could you be?" Blake asked, "Only thinking about yourself in this situation."

"You got me in this mess, sometimes I wonder why I even came…"

"Speaking of which how was your stay?" Blake asked giving an ear-to-ear grin. "I put you next to Joy's room, aren't I just a good person."

"I noticed…" He then began looking around. The two of them were at the town square, the new town square. An upgraded more sanitary town square. They sat outside a café and observed the children as they played a game of hop-scotch near the well.

 "This place." Germain began.

 "?"

 "How was it, Blake?"

Blake stopped swinging and looked around, "How did you envision it?"

"Something not like this of course. Grime, mud, tattered clothes, frowns, children crying, midwives arguing with their husbands on the street. This is… better than I would have imagined."

"But that's a pretty low bar." Blake said.

 "How so?"

"You've set it so low in fact I could jump over it without leaving the ground. What is grime? Dirt under fingernails? Maybe messy hair, isn't that how you found these people before you colonized them?"

 Germain said nothing.

"Children will always cry. Midwives and mistresses are always faded to have battles over birth rites, yet back then it was…"

"Something not like this… I can imagine."

Blake stared at him, head to torso. "What's changed Germain?"

 "Everything, war."

"Midland is always at war with the east and West, why so?"

"Why not? War is always inevitable, put more than 4 different people in one place and war is soon to follow. Along time ago, I had something I wanted." Germain continued, "Something that seemed so close, but in actuality had fallen from my grasp many times over. In the end I got it, but in the end, it was just a title and some land… it was…"

"Something not like this, huh?" Blake smiled.

 "I suppose." Germain returned one.

"I want a world that's equal, where sorcerers don't get protected by a government that forces them to kill each other. A government that forces them to obey its commands and worse yet a government that's living a lie. That's my ambition Germain."

"Will me being here really led to that very world?" He needed an answer any answer, perhaps all he wanted was a good one, perhaps that's all he needed. Maybe it was always faded to be this way, he had locked himself within his own mind and soul believing that one thing was always better than the other, "But no one gets to decide that, everyone's just trying to live a little."

"Yes, exactly. All those that you see here everybody just trying to survive in any way possible, I only hope to let them live as they please for as long as possible."

"You presume that because I'm here nobody else will come snooping around, as such you'll be able to move freely." Germain deduced, "You've even had me send my disciples off somewhere on a wild goose chase."

"Not necessarily, you being here is very useful, but I have a use for you. And there is a use for your disciples going where they are going, everything is right within my range of prediction."

 "?"

'The bounty on Akame's head has been activated earlier than I anticipated. Thinking back on it now, how was Gil able to survive all six siblings. I anticipated that Akame would be free in time to help him out, but last I heard the eldest brother wasn't one of the people Gil faced… it seems as though I have my work cut out for me.'

"Anyway, I best be off." Blake got up.

"Where are you off too all of a sudden?"

"Aww, were you enjoying our chat that much." Blake put on a cheeky smile, "I didn't think a man of your stature would enjoy such."

"Just what do people out here take me for?" Germain looked a bit upset.

"Not to worry though, I leave my capable assistant in your hands." He leaned in closer, "I could tell the both of you were getting comfortable."

"No, we weren't." Germain answered coldly.

"Jeez you remind me of someone else who doesn't like to have fun (He's referring to Akame)"

"Dr. Blake!" A feminine voice shouted from across the cobblestone street.

"Speaking of the devil." He mumbled to himself, meanwhile Germain leaned in closer to the table.

"The preparations have been made and the tower signal is up and running." She smiled clenching a tablet close to her chest.

"Great, I'll leave the rest to you." He then grabbed her shoulders.

 "?"

"Take a seat." He then forcefully shoved her into the seat across from Germain, "I'll probably be gone the entire day, so be a dear and take care of all my assignments. That includes baby sitting our precious Count Saint, don't let him get bored."

"Dr. Blake! Wait, I wanted… to come to." Her voice slowly faded and she gave a sigh.

'Am I really that unpleasant to be around?' Germain wondered as he noticed her body posture and facial behavior.

With the tablet close to her chest, she spoke softly, "Beautiful weather we're having."

"…Yes, I suppose it is." Germain responded almost to himself.

'God please help, I don't know what to do in this situation. Normally I'd be myself, but Blake says I'm loud and obnoxious, I can't be myself in front of someone like him. I also don't want him to think I don't like him or anything.'

The two then continued to sit their swallowed up by their own silence.
