Chapter 66 - Interference

The building collapsed in on itself.

Concrete. Steel. Dust.

All crashing down where Maxruell stood.

For a moment Nothing moved.

Then Darkness pulsed from within the rubble.

Slow.

Unstable.

Maxruell stepped out.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

But still standing.

"…You're annoying."

The New Generation didn't respond.

They surrounded him again.

Perfect formation.

No wasted motion.

The leader raised its hand.

"Final execution—"

"Stop."

The voice cut through the rain.

Clear.

Sharp.

Unshaken.

Everyone froze.

Maxruell's eyes shifted slightly.

"…Took you long enough."

From above—

Light descended.

Juvy landed between them.

Calm.

Controlled.

Radiant.

The rain didn't touch her.

It slid off the barrier surrounding her body.

The soldiers instantly recalibrated.

"SECOND TARGET CONFIRMED."

"LIGHT SIGNATURE—IDENTIFIED."

The leader stepped forward.

"…Juvy."

She didn't react to her name.

Her eyes were locked on Maxruell.

"You look worse than I expected."

Maxruell smirked faintly.

"…You talk more than I remember."

A pause.

Then Silence.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Two years apart.

And yet—

Nothing had really changed.

Juvy turned slightly.

Facing the soldiers now.

"You're done here."

The leader tilted its head.

"Both targets present."

A pause.

"Optimal outcome."

Juvy's light flared slightly.

"…You don't understand."

Maxruell stepped beside her.

Shadows rising again.

"…They never do."

The soldiers moved.

Faster than before.

But this time—

They weren't fighting one.

They were fighting two.

A blade came for Juvy—

Crystal formed instantly—

Perfect timing Blocked.

Maxruell moved in the same moment Shadow strike Direct hit Armor cracked.

No words.

No coordination.

But perfect sync.

Again.

Another attack Juvy redirected it and Maxruell followed through Destroyed the target.

The battlefield shifted instantly.

The New Generation paused.

"Synchronization detected."

Juvy frowned slightly.

"…They're adapting again."

Maxruell exhaled.

"…Then we finish it before they do."

They moved.

Together.

Juvy raised her hand, Light condensed Not explosive Focused.

Maxruell mirrored her Darkness sharpening Controlled.

They didn't combine this time.

They layered.

Light struck first Blinding, Disrupting vision Shadows followed Precise Targeting weak points.

One by one—

The soldiers fell.

Faster than before.

Cleaner.

More efficient.

The leader stepped back slightly.

"…New data acquired."

Juvy's eyes narrowed.

"…You're not leaving with anything."

She moved.

Faster than before.

The leader blocked But the impact cracked its stance.

Maxruell appeared behind it instantly Shadow blade and the armor broke.

For the first time The leader dropped to one knee.

Silence.

Rain poured harder.

The battlefield…

Was over.

Juvy lowered her hand slowly.

"…It's done."

Maxruell didn't relax.

"…No."

The leader laughed.

Not mechanical.

Human.

"You're both… incredible…"

Juvy froze slightly.

"…You're still conscious?"

The leader looked up.

Blood visible now beneath the broken armor.

"But it doesn't matter."

Its eyes locked onto them.

"You've already lost."

Maxruell's expression darkened.

"…Explain."

The leader smiled faintly.

"We were never meant to win."

A pause.

"We were meant to learn."

Silence.

Then—

All remaining units stopped moving.

Their eyes dimmed.

Systems shutting down.

Self-termination.

Juvy stepped back slightly.

"…Wait…"

Too late.

They collapsed.

Dead.

The battlefield went silent again.

Only rain remained.

Juvy looked at Maxruell.

"…They were testing us."

Maxruell nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

His gaze shifted upward.

"…And whoever's behind it…"

Juvy followed his gaze.

"…Is watching."

High above the clouds Mother Cain stood in silence.

Data streaming across her screen.

Every movement.

Every reaction.

Every detail.

Serah spoke quietly:

"Both targets confirmed stronger than projected."

Cain smiled faintly.

"Good."

Her eyes gleamed.

"Phase two begins."

Back below Juvy turned away.

"…I'm leaving."

Maxruell didn't stop her.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

Neither of them moved.

Not yet.

"…You've gotten better," Maxruell said.

Juvy didn't turn.

"So have you."

Another pause.

"…Next time," he added.

Juvy nodded slightly.

"…Next time."

Then—

They walked away.

Again.

But this time—

The gap between them felt smaller.

Not because they agreed.

But because they both understood.

The world had changed.

And something worse was coming.
