Chapter 67 - The Ones Beyond

The rain finally stopped.

But the city didn't feel any lighter.

Bodies of the New Generation units lay scattered across the street.

Lifeless.

Silent.

Juvy stood still for a moment longer.

Watching them.

"…They were human."

Maxruell didn't respond.

"…They chose this," he said coldly.

Juvy's expression tightened.

"…Did they?"

No answer.

The tension lingered—

But neither of them pushed it further.

Because both of them felt it.

This wasn't the real fight.

This was just the beginning.

High above the clouds…

Inside the massive structure Mother Cain stood at the center of a new chamber.

Unlike the others—

This one was alive.

Energy pulsed through the walls.

Breathing.

Reacting.

Serah stepped in.

"…So that was Phase One?"

Cain nodded.

"Observation and adaptation."

She raised her hand.

The room shifted.

Three pods rose from the ground.

Sealed.

Silent.

"Phase Two…"

The pods opened slowly.

Inside Figures stood.

Not armored like the others.

Not mechanical.

Human.

But something about them…

Felt wrong.

Their presence alone distorted the air.

Serah's eyes narrowed.

"…These aren't like the others."

Cain smiled faintly.

"No."

Her voice dropped.

"These are not enhanced humans."

A pause.

"They are something beyond that."

Back in the city Juvy moved through the streets alone.

Mara's voice echoed through her comms:

"You sure you don't want backup?"

Juvy shook her head slightly.

"…Not yet."

Eli chimed in:

"Something feels off about all this."

Juvy looked ahead.

"…I know."

The air felt heavier.

Like the world itself was holding its breath.

Across the city Maxruell stood on a rooftop.

Watching.

Waiting.

His shadows moved slower.

Not from weakness—

But from awareness.

"…Come out."

Silence.

Then—

A voice.

"…You sensed it."

Maxruell didn't turn.

"…You're not hiding."

A figure stepped into the open.

No armor.

No weapons.

Just a person.

But the pressure—

Was overwhelming.

Maxruell's shadows reacted instantly.

"…You're different."

The figure smiled slightly.

"Of course."

A pause.

"We were made to be."

At the same time Juvy stopped walking.

Her light flickered.

"…There it is."

Someone stood in front of her.

Same presence.

Same pressure.

High above Cain watched both screens.

Perfect synchronization.

Two encounters.

Two outcomes.

Serah spoke quietly:

"…You're sending them separately?"

Cain nodded.

"Yes."

Her eyes focused.

"Because they are strongest apart now."

A pause.

"And I want to see which one evolves further."

Back on the rooftop Maxruell faced the figure.

"…Name."

The figure tilted its head.

"…Names are irrelevant."

A pause.

"But if you insist…"

A faint smile formed.

"Call me… Veyron."

Across the city Juvy faced the other.

"…And you are?"

The figure bowed slightly.

"…Lyra."

Both of them smiled.

Not arrogantly.

But confidently.

"Let's begin."

Maxruell's shadows exploded outward.

Juvy's light surged at the same time.

Two battles.

Two enemies.

Both stronger than anything before.

And this time—

There would be no synchronization.

No backup.

No second chances.
