Chapter 98 - Do you know about my parents?

The adrenaline from the Root encounter had long since faded, replaced by the quiet, buzzing warmth of the Konoha afternoon. Karin was still a bit jumpy—her [Mind's Eye] was likely twitching at every shadow—but as we walked through the bustling market district, the sheer normalcy of the village started to ground her.

I spent the next hour playing the part of the doting guardian. We hit the high-end boutiques, and I didn't even look at the price tags. I bought her a new set of glasses with reinforced frames and high-clarity lenses, followed by a few outfits that actually fit her properly instead of those oversized Grass Village rags.

By the time we reached the central plaza, Karin was carrying a few bags, her cheeks flushed with a genuine, happy glow.

"Feeling better?" I asked, glancing at her.

"Yes... thank you, Kenji-kun," she whispered, her fingers brushing against my arm. "I didn't think... I didn't think I'd ever just be allowed to walk around like this."

"Get used to it. You're with me now," I smirked. My stomach let out a low, predatory growl. "Alright, enough shopping. It's time I took you to the true landmark of the Naruto world."

Karin blinked, tilting her head. "Naruto what?"

"Ahm... nothing. Just an old legend," I corrected smoothly. "I'm taking you to the best ramen place in the Five Nations. It's practically a holy site."

We rounded the corner and saw the familiar blue curtains of Ichiraku Ramen. The steam rising from the shop carried that divine scent of miso and pork bone broth.

Ayame was standing behind the counter, deftly serving a couple of civilian customers. She looked up as we approached, her face lighting up. "Welcome! Oh, Kenji! You're back!"

"In the flesh, Ayame-chan," I said, leaning against the counter. I let my gaze wander over her with a slow, deliberate appreciation that made her pause mid-pour. "You know, absence really does make the heart grow fonder. You've gotten even more radiant since I left. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were trying to lure me into a life of domestic bliss over a bowl of noodles."

Ayame's face turned a brilliant shade of pink, her eyes flashing with a mix of flustered anger and embarrassment. "You! You haven't changed at all! Still that same stinky mouth!"

"Is that stinky-mouthed brat back again?!"

Teuchi emerged from the back, his hands covered in flour, a mock scowl on his face.

"Hey there, old man," I chuckled, pulling out a stool for Karin. "Don't be so angry every time we meet. You'll die of high blood pressure before I can marry your daughter."

"You're the reason my blood pressure is high!" Teuchi barked, though there was a twinkle of amusement in his eyes. He set a glass of water down and finally took a good look at the girl sitting nervously beside me.

He froze. His eyes widened, his gaze lingering on the vibrant, deep crimson of Karin's hair. For a second, the jovial old man looked incredibly solemn, his eyes clouded with a distant memory.

"And who is this?" Teuchi asked softly. "I haven't seen her around... and she... she has the same hair as the Fourth's wife."

"Of course she does," I said, my voice grounding the moment. "She's from the same clan as hers. A survivor."

Teuchi let out a slow breath, nodding respectfully. "I see. Well... she's welcome here. Any friend of the red-haired lady is a friend of Ichiraku."

"Now, if you're done reminiscing, can you get us two large bowls of Miso Pork?" I grinned. "Add extra beef for my girl here. She needs to build up her strength."

As the noodles hit the boiling water, the sound of rhythmic crunching approached from the street.

"Kenji? I heard you were back from your 'training trip,'" Ino huffed, stepping into the stall. A faint pink hue touched her cheeks when she saw me, but her gaze immediately sharpened on Karin, who was practically fused to my arm. "And who's this? Wait... I know you. You were that girl from the Grass Village who kept hiding in the bushes!"

Karin stiffened, her grip on my hand tightening.

"Easy, Karin," I said, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "She isn't 'that girl from the Grass' anymore. She's a Konoha citizen. Her name is Karin Uzumaki."

Ino's sapphire eyes widened, her jaw dropping. "Uzumaki? Like... like Naruto?"

"Who's Naruto?" Karin asked, her voice small.

"A good buddy of mine," I replied. "A loudmouthed idiot with too much energy and the same red-blooded lineage as you. In some ways, he's your only living relative in this village."

I looked at the rest of Team 10 and patted the empty stools. "Would you guys like to join us? My treat".

"Did someone say 'treat'?" Choji's head poked in, eyes gleaming.

"Choji... you too?" I laughed. "Sit down."

"HEY! I WANT TO JOIN IN TOO!"

A yellow-haired blur popped up from behind Shikamaru. Naruto Uzumaki practically vibrated into the stall. "Kenji! Where were you?! Kakashi-sensei said you were busy with 'business'!" He skidded to a halt, looking at Karin. "And who is this sister? She's got really bright hair, dattebayo!"

In moments, the shop was crowded and loud. Karin, overwhelmed, tried to hide behind my shoulder, her sensory perception likely overloaded by the chaotic mix of chakra.

"Ok guys, calm down," I said, raising my hands. "First, sit. Eat whatever you want. It's on my tab".

"YEAH! KENJI IS THE BEST!" Naruto shouted.

I clapped my hands for attention. "Alright, listen up. This is Karin Uzumaki. She's a citizen of Konoha now. She's alone here, so I expect everyone to treat her like family. Got it?"

Ino offered a hesitant wave, while Shikamaru nodded lazily. Choji just gave a thumbs-up mid-chew.

"Uzumaki?" Naruto's voice suddenly dropped. He stopped eating, his blue eyes locking onto Karin with pure bewilderment. He looked at her hair, then at his own jacket. "She... she has the same name as me? Are we... related, Kenji?"

I looked at him; the blonde boy looked painfully hopeful. He had finally met someone with the same name, someone who might finally be "family."

I sighed. "In a distant way, yes. You're from the same clan."

Karin frowned, looking Naruto up and down. "How could he be an Uzumaki? He doesn't have the trademark red hair."

Everyone else nodded; though the clan was destroyed before they were born, they had read about the red hair in history lectures at the Academy.

I laughed. "That's because only Naruto's mother was an Uzumaki. And while the Uzumaki have incredible vitality, his father was even more of an oddball. His genes were strong enough to override the trademark red. Naruto inherited the physique and the name, but that's about it."

The revelation left the group stunned. No one had realized the "dead last" of the Academy had such a significant background. Naruto, however, wasn't thinking about status. He was clinging to my arm.

"Kenji... do you know? Do you know about my parents?"

I looked at him and sighed. "Yeah, I know. But I'm not the one to tell you that story. If you want the truth, you should ask your teacher, Jiraiya. He was very close to your father."
