Chapter 99 - Out of Danzo's reach

[Ichiraku Ramen]

Naruto's bowl of miso pork sat forgotten, steam curling lazily into the air and dampening his frozen expression. The mention of his parents—the final, forbidden piece of the puzzle he'd been missing his entire life—hit him harder than any Rasengan could. For a heartbeat, the world seemed to stop spinning. Then, the blonde blur was gone, his stool still rattling against the floorboards from the sheer force of his departure.

"Naruto! Your extra chashu!" Ayame called out, her voice trailing off as he vanished into the bustling crowds of the market district, a boy possessed by the desperate need to find a certain perverted hermit.

I leaned back, letting out a long, weary sigh as I watched the dust settle on the empty street. "That kid is going to give himself an ulcer running around on an empty stomach. High-speed sprinting and existential crises don't mix well."

The atmosphere in the stall shifted instantly. The jovial, noisy mood evaporated, replaced by a heavy, contemplative silence. Shikamaru looked down at his own bowl, his usual "troublesome" scowl replaced by a look of rare, quiet empathy. Even Ino remained quiet for a moment, her sapphire eyes softening. Everyone in the Rookie Nine knew Naruto was an orphan, but seeing that raw, jagged hunger for family made the reality of his isolation sting.

Soon, however, that collective curiosity sharpened and pivoted directly toward me like a kunai to a target.

"Kenji," Shikamaru said, his voice dropping into that low, analytical register that meant he was putting the pieces together. "You just dropped a bombshell that even the Academy instructors won't touch with a ten-foot pole. How exactly does a 'civilian' orphan know the classified lineage of the village's most loudmouthed ninja?"

Ino leaned in, her eyes narrowing with intense, suspicious heat. "Yeah, and you called his father a 'strong oddball.' That didn't sound like a guess, Kenji. It sounded like a description. Who was he?"

I picked up my chopsticks and casually fished for a slice of pork, my expression a masterclass in bored nonchalance. "No can do, ladies and gentlemen. The secrets behind that family tree are strictly above your clearance level. If I told you, I'd have to invite the ANBU over for a sleepover to scrub your brains, and I'm already hitting my quota for 'official' guests today."

I shot Ino a slow, predatory wink that made her breath hitch. "But hey, Ino, if you're truly that desperate for my secrets, I have a special one-on-one 'private consultation' offer just for you. No paperwork, no elders—just a very long night of... intensive research."

Ino's face instantly ignited, a nuclear-level blush spreading from her neck to her hairline. "You! You absolute, unrepentant pervert! We're trying to have a serious conversation about village secrets!"

"I am being serious," I grinned, taking a bite of the pork. "Research is the foundation of all progress."

[Deep Beneath Konoha – Root Headquarters]

Deep beneath the village, where the air was stagnant and the only light came from the flickering, cold blue of torches, the atmosphere was far more lethal.

CRACK.

A heavy stone table splintered under the force of a single, bandaged fist. Danzo Shimura stood in the shadows, his one visible eye burning with a cold, terrifying fury. Kneeling before him was the sole survivor of the kidnapping squad—the Aburame leader—his shoulder a mangled ruin of cauterized flesh and shattered bone.

"A commoner," Danzo hissed, his voice a dry, rattling rasp that echoed off the damp stone walls. "A mere Genin dared to defy the orders of the Foundation? To slaughter my subordinates as if they were training dummies? Trash! You were bested by a child and still had the audacity to return. You should have stayed in that alley to rot with the others."

"He... he used the Rasengan, Danzo-sama," the Aburame wheezed, his head bowed low in a desperate attempt to ignore the pain. "His speed, his strength... it was not that of a child. He fought on multiple fronts with Shadow Clones as if it were a routine exercise. And the pressure he released... it felt as if the very air was trying to crush us. He is an anomaly."

Danzo went still, his anger slowly refining into a dark, calculating greed. To kill four Chunin and humiliate an Elite Jonin-level operative while still officially a Genin... that kind of power was a variable he couldn't ignore.

"Such a powerful weapon should not be left to waste in the hands of the Hokage's sentimentality," Danzo murmured, his gaze shifting to the darkness. "The safety of Konoha requires that talent of this magnitude be tempered in the Roots. If he will not be invited, he will be harvested. He is no longer just a nuisance... he is a priority asset."

Unbeknownst to me, I had just become the primary target of the most dangerous man in the Leaf. Not that I would have cared—a vulture is still just a bird, and I had already proven I knew how to pluck feathers.

[The Village Streets – Nightfall]

On the other side of the village, the moon had risen over the quiet rooftops, casting long, silver shadows across the cobblestones. Team 10 and the others had eventually split off to their own homes, leaving just Karin and me walking toward the heart of the village.

Karin was practically vibrating with a quiet, genuine happiness I hadn't seen since I'd pulled her from the Grass Village. She clutched her shopping bags as if they were precious artifacts.

"Kenji-kun... those people were... they were nice," she whispered, her red eyes shining behind her new lenses. "I've never had friends before. I didn't think I'd be allowed to just sit and eat and laugh with everyone like that. Is... is this what it's like to live here?"

"I told you I protect what's mine, Karin," I said, looking at her with a grounded, supportive gaze. "But friends are just the beginning. There's a whole life waiting for you here—one where you aren't a tool or a battery."

"Where are we going next?" she asked, her voice filled with a new, fragile hope.

I looked toward the massive, illuminated tower in the center of the village—the only place Danzo's reach couldn't touch without risking a civil war.

"To the only person in this village who has enough authority to ensure your safety and give you the resources your bloodline deserves," I smirked.
