I placed a pair of soft slippers at the entrance and waited, but no one answered. My eyes shifted to the door—and that was when I saw him.
Ashton stood there, his figure tall and still, his gaze deep and unreadable. The air changed the moment our eyes met, a quiet pressure settling between us.
I frowned. Why is he here? At this hour… shouldn't he be with Rebecca?
I tried to close the door, but he stopped it with one hand. His face darkened, his voice low and sharp. "Who are you waiting for?"
He pushed harder, forcing the door open. I let go, leaning back with a careless look even though my chest felt tight. "Who else would I be waiting for in the middle of the night?" I said. "Someone who can ease my loneliness."
He stepped inside and shut the door behind him, trapping me in the small space. His eyes flickered, something dangerous flashing through them. "Ease your loneliness?"
Then he moved closer, his body pressing against mine, testing, claiming. "You think that's enough?"
