"Fine. Tomorrow, then!" Macy said quickly before hanging up.
The line went dead, and I lowered my phone. The cab slowed and stopped in front of the hotel. I paid the driver and got out, helping Nick beside me.
The night air felt cold against my skin. I looked up at the stairs leading to the entrance and let out a quiet sigh. Who designed a place like this? So many steps just to reach the door. It felt unnecessary.
Still, I didn't have the energy to complain out loud. I held Nick steady and guided him up step by step. He was heavy on my side, but manageable. I was wearing flats, so it wasn't as hard as it could have been.
Halfway up, my phone rang again. I shifted my hand toward my bag to get it, but before I could, Nick's arm slipped around my waist.
A reflex kicked in. I pushed him away without thinking.
But we were on stairs.
The moment I let go, everything tilted. Nick lost balance and fell backward down the steps.
My mind went blank.
For a second, I couldn't even move.
