"Uh, bye. Talk to you later!" Macy cut the line suddenly.
I frowned at the phone. Something felt off. I had clearly asked Jared to take her back last night, so why did she sound like that? And why did it feel like she was hiding something? My mind went straight to the worst conclusion. A part of me even wondered if she had done something reckless again, the kind she always swore she wouldn't.
I called Jared right after. The phone rang for a while before he picked up.
"Scarlett," his voice came through, steady and clear. He sounded awake, focused.
"What are you doing?" I asked, still watching the busy street ahead.
"I'm driving. What's wrong?"
So he wasn't with her. That alone made things more confusing.
I let out a small breath and softened my tone. "Nothing serious. I'm done with work. Are you free this afternoon? Let's have lunch."
"Sure," he answered without even thinking.
