Chapter 35 - The Public Confession (Accidental)-4

Chapter 4 — Quiet Resolution

Two days later, the rumors finally started to fade.

Not completely.

But enough.

At Furinkan High, drama rarely lasted long. Something new always appeared to replace it.

A fight.

A test disaster.

A teacher meltdown.

By the end of the week, most students had already moved on to the next entertaining story.

Ranma appreciated that more than he would ever admit.

Still, the awkwardness between him and Akane hadn't disappeared.

It had just… changed.

Before, their arguments were loud and predictable.

Now they were quieter.

More careful.

And somehow more confusing.

---

The dojo was quiet that evening.

Ranma sat on the wooden porch outside, leaning back against one of the pillars. The sky was turning orange as the sun dropped behind the rooftops.

He tossed a small pebble into the yard.

Watched it bounce.

Then tossed another.

Normally this would have been the perfect time for training.

But his mind kept wandering.

Which was irritating.

Because he hated when his brain refused to cooperate.

The sliding door behind him opened softly.

Ranma didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Akane stepped out onto the porch carrying two cups of tea.

She set one beside him.

He blinked.

"…Thanks."

She sat down a short distance away.

Not far.

Not close either.

Just enough space to feel deliberate.

For a few minutes, neither of them spoke.

Ranma took a sip of the tea.

"Good."

Akane nodded slightly.

The silence returned.

Normally silence between them meant someone was about to start an argument.

This silence felt different.

Calmer.

But also heavier.

Ranma finally broke it.

"So… people stopped asking you about it?"

Akane looked out at the yard.

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

"There are still a few idiots."

Ranma snorted.

"Sounds about right."

Akane glanced sideways at him.

"You were pretty loud denying it."

Ranma groaned.

"Don't remind me."

"I'm just saying."

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

"A little."

Ranma shook his head.

"Unbelievable."

Akane took a small sip of tea.

Then asked casually—

"You really hate the idea that much?"

Ranma blinked.

"The idea of what?"

"That you confessed."

He looked away quickly.

"That's not the problem."

"Then what is?"

Ranma hesitated.

Explaining things was not his strength.

Especially when those things involved feelings.

"It's just…" he started.

Then stopped.

Akane waited patiently.

Ranma rubbed the back of his neck.

"I didn't want everyone else involved."

Akane considered that.

"That's fair."

Ranma glanced at her.

"You're not mad?"

"I was."

"Was?"

Akane shrugged lightly.

"Now it's just annoying."

Ranma relaxed slightly.

"I can live with annoying."

She gave him a small sideways look.

"You're very annoying."

"Hey."

"I'm just being honest."

Ranma took another sip of tea.

Then muttered—

"You didn't deny it either."

Akane froze slightly.

"What?"

"When people asked."

Akane stared at him.

"How would you know?"

Ranma shrugged.

"I heard things."

"What things?"

"People said you didn't argue much."

Akane looked away toward the yard again.

"That doesn't mean anything."

Ranma watched her carefully.

"Did it bother you?"

Akane didn't answer immediately.

The evening breeze moved softly through the trees.

Finally she said—

"…Not exactly."

Ranma raised an eyebrow.

"That's vague."

"I'm allowed to be vague."

He couldn't argue with that.

Another quiet moment passed.

Then Akane spoke again.

"You said something the other day."

Ranma tensed slightly.

"Which part?"

"The part about why you fight."

He remembered instantly.

And wished he didn't.

"Oh."

Akane kept her eyes on the yard.

"Did you mean it?"

Ranma considered lying.

It would be easier.

But somehow that felt pointless now.

"…Yeah," he admitted.

Akane's fingers tightened slightly around her cup.

Ranma noticed.

"But it's not like what everyone thinks," he added quickly.

Akane looked back at him.

"Why not?"

Ranma hesitated.

Because explaining the difference felt impossible.

"It's just… different."

Akane studied his face carefully.

Then said quietly—

"Different how?"

Ranma looked out at the yard.

At the training post he had cracked during practice last week.

He spoke slowly.

"Fighting's just… part of my life."

Akane nodded slightly.

"I know."

"And you're always around."

"Also true."

"So when people start trouble with you…"

He shrugged.

"…I get involved."

Akane tilted her head.

"That sounds simple."

"It is."

"But you didn't say it like that."

Ranma frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Akane repeated the words softly.

"You said you wouldn't keep throwing yourself into fights if you didn't care."

Ranma rubbed his face.

"Yeah. That."

"That doesn't sound simple."

Ranma didn't respond immediately.

Because she wasn't wrong.

Akane waited.

Finally he said—

"…Maybe it's not."

Akane looked back toward the fading sunlight again.

"Ranma."

"Yeah?"

"You're terrible at explaining things."

"I know."

"But you're also bad at hiding them."

He blinked.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Akane stood up, brushing dust lightly from her skirt.

"It means people probably believed you."

Ranma looked up at her.

"That's not helpful."

Akane smiled slightly.

It wasn't teasing this time.

Just… gentle.

"Maybe that's not such a bad thing."

Ranma frowned.

"Why?"

She started walking toward the door.

Then paused.

Looking back over her shoulder.

"For someone who didn't mean to confess," she said quietly, "you sounded pretty sincere."

Ranma stared at her.

Before he could think of a response, she slid the door open and stepped inside.

Leaving him alone on the porch again.

Ranma sat there for a long moment.

Thinking.

Then he muttered to himself—

"…This is way more complicated than fighting."
