Chapter 34 - The Public Confession (Accidental)-3

Chapter 3 — Confrontation

The training yard behind the dojo was quiet.

Late afternoon sunlight stretched across the wooden floorboards, casting long shadows from the beams above. The air smelled faintly of dust and old wood.

Ranma stood in the center of the yard, throwing quick punches into the air.

Not training properly.

Just moving.

His mind wasn't on the movements anyway.

It hadn't been all day.

Punch.

Step.

Turn.

The rumors had followed him everywhere.

Hallways.

Classrooms.

Even the cafeteria.

By the time school ended, people had already upgraded the story from a loud argument to a full romantic confession.

Ranma exhaled sharply.

"Stupid."

Punch.

His fist cut through the air harder this time.

"Should've just kept my mouth shut."

He spun into another strike.

Missed the imaginary target slightly.

That irritated him more than it should have.

"Focus," he muttered.

But the problem wasn't focus.

The problem was Akane.

He hadn't spoken to her since yesterday.

Every time he saw her, she looked away.

Which was fair.

But it also made everything worse.

He threw another punch.

"Great job," he muttered to himself. "Now she probably thinks you're an idiot."

A voice behind him answered calmly.

"You are."

Ranma froze.

He turned slowly.

Akane stood near the edge of the yard.

Arms crossed.

Expression neutral.

Ranma rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"Oh."

Akane stepped forward.

"You've been avoiding me."

Ranma shrugged.

"So have you."

"That's because you caused a disaster."

"That wasn't on purpose!"

Akane stopped a few steps away.

"Then what was it?"

Ranma opened his mouth.

Closed it.

"Just… a slip."

Akane raised an eyebrow.

"A slip."

"Yeah."

"You accidentally shouted something in the middle of a crowded courtyard."

Ranma winced.

"When you say it like that…"

"Because that's exactly what happened."

He sighed.

"I know."

The silence that followed was uncomfortable.

Akane shifted slightly.

"Do you know how many people asked me about it today?"

Ranma grimaced.

"I can guess."

"Twenty-three."

He blinked.

"You counted?"

"I stopped counting after lunch."

Ranma groaned.

"Sorry."

Akane studied him carefully.

"You're denying it pretty loudly."

"Because it's not what people think!"

"Then what did you mean?"

Ranma hesitated.

That question again.

The same one from yesterday.

Except now it felt heavier.

"I just meant…" he started.

Then stopped.

Akane waited.

Ranma looked away.

"It came out wrong."

"That's not an explanation."

"It's the truth."

Akane frowned.

"So you didn't mean it."

Ranma shook his head quickly.

"I didn't say that."

She blinked.

"Then what are you saying?"

Ranma rubbed his face in frustration.

"I'm saying it wasn't supposed to be some big confession!"

Akane's voice sharpened slightly.

"But you said you care."

Ranma stiffened.

The words hung between them.

"I didn't mean to shout it in front of half the school," he said quietly.

Akane crossed her arms again.

"That's not the same thing as saying it wasn't true."

Ranma looked up.

Their eyes met.

For once, neither of them looked away immediately.

He exhaled slowly.

"…It wasn't exactly a lie."

Akane's expression changed slightly.

Not shock.

Not anger.

Something quieter.

Ranma noticed it and immediately felt defensive.

"But that doesn't mean what everyone's saying is right!"

Akane tilted her head.

"So what are they saying?"

"That I confessed!"

"Didn't you?"

"No!"

Akane stared at him.

"You literally shouted that you fight because you care about me."

"That's not a confession!"

"It sounds like one."

Ranma threw his hands up.

"I was frustrated!"

"And honest."

He stopped moving.

Akane didn't say it loudly.

But the word landed harder than anything else.

Honest.

Ranma looked away again.

"Maybe."

Akane's voice softened slightly.

"Then why are you pretending it was nothing?"

Ranma hesitated.

Because admitting it meant something.

And he wasn't ready to define what.

"I didn't say it for everyone to hear," he muttered.

Akane studied him quietly.

"No," she said after a moment. "You didn't."

The tension between them shifted.

Less defensive now.

More uncertain.

Ranma kicked lightly at the ground.

"Everyone's acting like it was some dramatic love confession."

Akane almost smiled.

"Well… it kind of sounded like one."

Ranma groaned.

"Don't start."

"I'm not teasing."

"Good."

A short silence followed.

Then Akane spoke again.

"You should be more careful about what you say in public."

Ranma glanced up.

"You heard what I meant."

Akane didn't answer immediately.

Instead she looked toward the fading sunlight at the edge of the yard.

"Maybe."

Ranma waited.

When she didn't continue, he frowned slightly.

"That's it?"

"What else do you want me to say?"

"I don't know."

Akane looked back at him.

For the first time since the conversation started, her expression wasn't annoyed.

It was thoughtful.

"You caused a lot of trouble yesterday," she said.

Ranma winced.

"Yeah."

"But…"

She hesitated.

Ranma noticed.

"But what?"

Akane shook her head slightly.

"Nothing."

Ranma narrowed his eyes.

"You were about to say something."

"No I wasn't."

"You definitely were."

Akane turned away.

"You should fix that practice post you broke last week."

Ranma blinked.

"What does that have to do with—"

But she was already walking back toward the house.

He stood there for a second, confused.

"Hey!"

She didn't turn around.

"Don't shout things like that in public again," she called over her shoulder.

Ranma sighed.

"Trust me, I'm not planning to."

She paused at the doorway.

Just for a second.

Then said quietly—

"You didn't say it for them anyway."

Ranma blinked.

By the time he processed the sentence, she had already stepped inside.

Leaving him standing alone in the yard.

Thinking about the one thing she hadn't denied.
