"How can I help you today?"
Maya told her directly. She was pregnant. The pregnancy was early, she estimated five to six weeks, based on what she knew of the timing. She wanted to terminate it. She wanted to do it today, here, while she was already in the building.
Dr. Reyes did not react with any expression Maya had not anticipated. She asked the standard questions in a measured sequence. How far along Maya estimated she was. Whether she had experienced any complications or unusual symptoms. Whether she had any relevant medical history. Whether she was on any current medications.
Maya answered each question with the same economy she had used to introduce the subject.
Then the doctor set her tablet down and folded her hands on the desk, and her voice shifted slightly. Not softer exactly, but more deliberate, signaling a transition from intake to information.
