"That's impossible..." he murmured almost inaudibly.
Seeing the turmoil written across his face, Miriam gently squeezed his hand.
"I know this is difficult to hear," she said softly. "But Maya has already moved on. She's living in Ashbourne City, in Nightshade Country now, and she's starting a new life there."
She paused briefly before offering him a comforting smile.
"You don't have to carry this burden anymore, Ethan. Right now, your only responsibility is to recover. Once you're healthy again, we'll find you a wonderful Luna... someone who truly deserves to spend the rest of her life with you."
Ethan slowly closed his eyes, hoping that when he opened them again everything his mother had just told him would somehow begin to make sense. Instead, the confusion only deepened.
