"Why don't you tell me, Rias?" I asked, casually gesturing toward the white-haired girl sitting on the sofa. "You're the one who's had Koneko stalking me twenty-four-seven since Monday."

Koneko's golden eyes narrowed to slits. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not a stalker."

"Maybe," I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out my phone. I tossed it onto the coffee table.

The screen was lit up with three different photos I'd taken over the last two days, Koneko ducking behind a wall near my house, Koneko on the roof of a nearby convenience store, and Koneko sitting in a tree down my street.

Rias frowned, looking at the photos, but she didn't look defeated. "That just proves I was keeping an eye on a potential threat. It doesn't prove anything about your power."

"True," I conceded. "Koneko is good at hiding. Her familiar, on the other hand? Not so much."

I raised my hand and snapped my fingers.

The clubroom door clicked open. Everyone tensed, turning toward the entrance.

Padding quietly into the room was my spectral familiar. The massive, ghostly wolf had its jaws clamped firmly around the scruff of a struggling, yowling white cat.

Koneko bolted upright, her stoic facade shattering. "Shiro!"

The wolf trotted over to me, completely ignoring the aggressive devil auras flaring up in the room, and gently dropped the white cat into my hands. The cat wasn't hurt; the wolf had just pinned it, but it was incredibly pissed off.

"Let go of me! Unhand me, you brute!" the cat hissed, flailing its paws.

Koneko took a step forward, her fists clenched, but before she could do anything, I channeled mana into my palms.

[Spell Cast: Healing Hands]

A warm, brilliant golden light erupted from my hands, washing over the angry cat. The familiar instantly stopped struggling. The tension bled out of its little body, and it actually let out a loud, contented purr.

"Oh... wait, that actually feels really nice," the cat mumbled, going completely limp in my hands.

I casually tossed the relaxed cat over to Koneko, who caught her familiar out of pure reflex. But she wasn't looking at the cat. She, along with everyone else in the room, was staring at my hands.

Rias gripped the edge of her desk, her composure finally cracking. "What was that? You're not a Devil, you don't have the aura of a Fallen Angel, and you're certainly not an Angel. Humans can't use magic like that without a Sacred Gear!"

"I like to think of myself as a battlemage," I said calmly.

To prove the point, I dropped the Restoration spell and pulled from the Destruction tree. The golden light vanished, instantly replaced by the sharp, violent crackle of blue lightning arcing between my fingers. The smell of ozone filled the room.

"And for the record," I said, my voice dropping to a low, warning register, "I really don't appreciate being spied on."

A blur of motion caught the corner of my eye.

Kiba crossed the room with unnatural speed. The cold steel of a broadsword was suddenly resting a fraction of an inch from my throat.

"You threaten the President," Kiba warned, his voice devoid of its usual polite tone, "you die."

I didn't blink. I didn't even move my neck.

I just shifted my left hand and grabbed the flat of Kiba's blade.

[Spell Cast: Sparks]

Steel is a fantastic conductor. A lethal surge of high-voltage electricity pumped out of my palm, traveling straight down the blade and into Kiba's hands.

The Knight piece might have given him speed, but it didn't give him immunity to lightning. Kiba let out a strangled gasp as his muscles seized violently. He dropped the sword, collapsing to one knee and gasping for air as the residual electricity sparked off his clothes.

The room erupted. Koneko dropped into a fighting stance. Akeno's hands sparked with her own yellow lightning.

"Enough!" Rias shouted, slamming her hands down on her desk.

The room froze. Akeno lowered her hands, and Koneko reluctantly backed off, helping a twitching Kiba to his feet.

Rias took a deep breath, her chest heaving as she forced herself to calm down. She sat back in her heavy leather chair, lacing her fingers together. She looked at me, realizing for the first time that she had absolutely no leverage.

"Alright," Rias said, her voice tight but measured. "You've made your point, Shiro. What do you want?"

The lightning faded from my hands. I kicked Kiba's dropped sword back toward him and squared my shoulders, looking directly into Rias's eyes. I wasn't playing games anymore.

"It's simple," I said, ticking the points off on my fingers. "Number one: I want my privacy. That means no familiars, no Devils, and no Koneko watching my house. If I catch anything spying on me again, I'm sending it back to you in a matchbox."

Rias's jaw tightened, but she gave a stiff nod.

"Number two," I continued. "I will not join your peerage. I don't care about the faction wars, the Fallen Angels, or your political problems. I am sitting this out."

"And the third?" she asked quietly.

I glanced over at Isa, who was standing frozen in the corner, clutching her red gauntlet to her chest.

"Number three," I said, my voice softening just a fraction before hardening again as I looked back at the crimson-haired devil. "You look after Isabella. You brought her into this world, so it's your responsibility to make sure she's trained and ready to defend herself. She doesn't deserve to die a second time."

Isa's breath hitched. A dark blush spread across her face, but I kept my eyes locked entirely on Rias.

It was a battle of wills, human against high-class devil. And as we stared each other down in the dead silence of the clubroom, I made it perfectly clear that I wasn't the one who was going to blink first.
