Chapter 14: The Race Against the Storm
The sky over the Silent Death Forest had changed.
For the last week, it had been a vibrant, dangerous blue. But now, bruised purple clouds were rolling in from the north, stacking on top of each other like mountains of iron.
The air grew heavy. The wind picked up, rustling the leaves with a sound that sounded like a thousand whispering voices.
Smell that? Kael thought, sniffing the air. Ozone. Wet earth. Pine needles.
"Rain is coming," Kael announced, looking up at his roofless house. "And it's going to be a big one."
He looked at the pile of Cedar Shingles he had spent the morning splitting. They were thin, flat squares of wood, ready to be nailed down.
"System, time check?"
[Current Time: 14:30]
[Weather Alert: Severe Thunderstorm approaching. ETA: 45 Minutes.]
"Forty-five minutes?" Kael swore. "Shit."
He turned to his crew.
"Alright, listen up! This is a Code Red emergency. If we don't get this roof on, the house floods. The floor warps. The chimney cement dissolves. We lose everything."
Noir, sensing the change in air pressure, looked serious for once. He stood up, his tail lashing.
"Noir," Kael pointed to the heavy bundles of shingles. "I need you to drag those to the ladder. Fast."
"Tess!" Kael pointed to the roof beams. "I need you up top. Use your sticky silk. Seal the gaps between the ridge beams. Make it watertight!"
Tess bobbed her body up and down. 'Understood! Web paste!'
"Break!"
Kael grabbed his hammer and a pouch of wooden pegs. He scrambled up the ladder with an agility that would make a monkey jealous.
He balanced on the sloping rafters. It was high—about seven meters off the ground. The wind was already whipping his hair into his face.
"Start from the bottom, work up," Kael muttered the mantra.
Noir arrived at the base of the ladder, dragging a bundle of shingles with his teeth. Kael used a rope to hoist them up.
Heave. Catch. Bam.
Kael fell into a trance.
Grab a shingle. Place it. Whack-whack. Next.
His hands were a blur. His [High Human] dexterity was pushing him beyond normal limits. He wasn't thinking about the geometry anymore; his body just knew where the wood needed to go.
Tap-tap-BANG.
Below him, Noir was running back and forth like a black streak, ferrying wood.
Above him, Tess was skittering along the central beam. She was spitting a thick, translucent goop from her mouth, plastering the joints where the wood met. It wasn't pretty, but it was the best glue in the world.
Rumble...
Thunder. It was close. A deep, guttural growl that shook the timber frame.
"Faster!" Kael yelled. "It's barely halfway done!"
The wind howled, trying to rip the shingles out of his hands. A sudden gust nearly knocked him off the roof. He slipped, his boot finding no traction on the smooth wood.
Crap!
He flailed, sliding toward the edge.
Thwip!
A white rope hit his back. It stuck instantly.
Tess was holding onto the ridge beam with six legs, holding Kael with a line of silk from her spinnerets.
"Thanks, Tess!" Kael gasped, pulling himself back up. "I owe you a fly!"
He got back to work.
30 Minutes left... 15 Minutes left...
The first drop hit his cheek. It was cold and heavy, like a coin.
Plop. Plop. Hiss.
The rain began to fall, slowly at first, hitting the dry leaves with a noise like static.
"Last row!" Kael screamed over the wind. "Cap the ridge!"
He slammed the final pieces of wood over the peak of the roof. Tess immediately coated them in a thick layer of waterproof silk.
BOOM!
A bolt of lightning cracked the sky open.
And then, the heavens opened.
It wasn't just rain; it was a waterfall. A solid sheet of water slammed into the forest.
"Get inside!" Kael roared.
He slid down the ladder, soaking wet in seconds. Noir was already bounding through the open doorway. Tess scuttled down the wall and dashed inside.
Kael jumped through the doorframe and spun around. He grabbed a heavy tarp (made from woven vines and leaves earlier) and nailed it over the empty window frame.
He slammed the heavy wooden door shut and dropped the locking bar.
THUD.
Silence.
Well, not silence. Outside, the world was ending. The rain hammered against the roof like a thousand drumsticks. The wind screamed at the walls.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat.
But inside?
Kael stood in the dark living room, water dripping from his nose.
He looked up.
The roof held. Not a single leak.
"We... we should dry," Kael whispered, wiping his face.
He looked at Noir. The panther was shaking himself dry, spraying water everywhere. Tess was huddled in the corner, looking exhausted but proud.
"Good job, team," Kael breathed. He felt a sudden wave of exhaustion hit him. His arms felt like lead.
But there was one more thing to do.
He walked over to the stone fireplace. He piled up some dry shavings and wood he had stored earlier.
He struck his flint.
Spark. Flash. Whoosh.
The fire caught. The flames licked up the dry wood, yellow and orange dancing in the dark. Smoke rose up... and went straight up the chimney. No smoke in the room. The draft worked perfectly.
The warmth began to spread outward, pushing back the damp chill.
Kael laid out his sleeping mat (dried grass and furs) near the fire. He sat down, leaning his back against the warm stone of the hearth.
Noir flopped down next to him, resting his heavy head on Kael's leg. Tess crept closer, basking in the heat.
Kael listened to the storm raging outside. It sounded violent, angry, and cold. But in here, with the fire crackling and the smell of cedar wood and wet dog (cat), it was perfect.
"System," Kael whispered. "Status."
He wanted to see how much he had grown before he slept.

Kael drifted off to sleep, completely unaware that the item in his inventory—the [??? Black Stone]—was pulsing softly in rhythm with his heartbeat, like waiting for something.
