Chapter 32 Part 1 Affair Exposed

Lost in thought, Qi returned home.

Mother was on the sofa watching TV. Seeing him come in, she pointed to the spot next to her. Qi didn't think much of it and sat down.

Mother spoke at once: "How long have you and your aunt been at this?"

Qi answered almost without thinking, "Several months." Then he realized what he'd said, eyes widening as he stared at Mother in horror.

Mother's face was calm as water, still reclining, eyes fixed on the TV.

After a long while, Mother spoke again: "Don't you want to say something to Mom? Explain something?"

Qi breathed heavily, gazing at Mother, not saying a word.

Getting no reply, Mother turned her head to stare at him, her gaze sharp and cold.

Qi could hardly meet her eyes. He lowered his head helplessly.

A glass hit the coffee table in front of Qi with a crack, shattering to pieces.

"You've got the face to do it but not the face to admit it! You're just like your father both cowards!" Mother finally exploded.

"Tell me honestly how did you and Xiaomei get together?" she demanded, trembling with rage, her chest heaving.

Qi didn't dare speak. He sat frozen on the sofa, listening to her fury.

"Do you know what you're doing? Do you really know what you're doing? She she's your aunt! You getting with her do you know what it's called? It's incest!"

"Oh, you're good… Doing it in the kitchen? Do you take me for blind or deaf? Tell me tell me, damn it!" Mother finally cursed.

Strangely, Qi began to calm from his first shock calm enough to think fast, to weigh his response. In this state, he felt his heart go still as water.

He heard every word and analyzed them as they came. He didn't know if it would help, but the thinking drove out his fear and that was enough.

Then, when "damn it" passed through his filter "damn your mother" he felt a flicker of absurdity. Wasn't she cursing herself?

He couldn't stop a snort of laughter.

"What? You're laughing?" Mother was beyond furious. She jumped up, rushed to him, and slapped him across the face. Qi's left cheek blazed with pain.

In his memory, this was the first time she had struck his face. As a child, when he was naughty, she'd spanked him, but never hit his face. This was a first.

Qi looked up, eyes empty, at his mother. His mind was clear again, but he couldn't control his facial expression just as the laugh had been an unconscious reflex. Now too, his face wouldn't obey.

Mother raised her hand to strike again then froze. His left cheek bore a clear handprint, his eyes dulled.

She suddenly broke into tears, covered her face with both hands, and collapsed onto the sofa.

Between sobs, she cried to herself: "What sin did I commit in a past life… to end up with you two father and son! One starts and abandons, the other commits incest with his aunt… Heaven help me… how did I give birth to such a wretch!"

Watching her wail, Qi grew even calmer. He felt he'd regained control of his body. Testing a few movements, he suddenly spoke: "Mom, what are you saying?"

Startled, she let her hands drop and turned to him. "What do you mean, what am I saying?"

She seemed baffled by his sudden line.

"You were saying I'm committing incest with Aunt? I don't know what you're talking about!" By now, Qi's mind was fully composed, and he had decided on a tactic: deny everything.

"What did you say?" She widened her eyes, then recognized this as an attempt to wriggle out he'd done it with her before.

"You're not going to admit it?" she sneered.

"Mom, if you're going to say something, back it up. Accusing me and Aunt of incest these are not words to be thrown around. Without evidence, you ruin both our names," Qi said, thinking lucidly. In law, a conclusion needs an evidentiary chain. Physical evidence matters most; witness statements are circumstantial. Without direct physical evidence, an event can't be definitively determined.

He'd read widely finished Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws in fifth grade and knew how logic weighed facts. Even if Mother had seen or heard something in the kitchen, he could deny it if there was no hard proof.

"No wonder you're your father's son just as thorough," Mother said, cooling.

"Is that praise or a jab?" Qi asked lightly. Since this was a confrontation, there was no backing down.

But Mother's cold smile returned. She pulled out her phone and pressed play.

Moans of lovers and the wet sound of bodies striking rose from the speaker.

Qi's pupils blew wide.

Audio is circumstantial but with voice analysis to confirm authenticity and uniqueness, it can become direct evidence.
