"Don't mistake me for a kind man," Santiago said coldly. "Because I'm not."
Jacqueline swallowed hard.
"I should have killed you already for shooting my mate," he continued, his voice low and dangerous. Then he paused, his gaze drifting for a moment as if replaying something in his mind.
"But you didn't know what was happening," he finally added. "And in a situation where your own life was in danger… you chose to cover her when she was exposed instead of saving yourself."
He spoke the last part in a strange tone, as though that single act had struck something deep within him.
Jacqueline frowned slightly.
She didn't understand.
Mate?
What did he mean by that?
Henri and Ignacio had also been asking her the same question over and over again earlier.
"What is a mate?" she asked plainly.
Santiago stared at her, momentarily stunned.
"You don't know?" he asked slowly.
She shook her head.
"Did you know Damien was a werewolf?" he asked, studying her face with curiosity.
