Jacqueline sat curled in the corner of the cell, her knees pulled tightly against her chest as her arms wrapped around them.
She had been crying nonstop since the previous night.
Now there were no tears left.
Her eyes burned painfully, dry and swollen from hours of sobbing. Her head throbbed relentlessly, every pulse sending dull waves of pain through her skull. Even blinking hurt.
She felt hollow.
Completely drained.
Earlier, Santiago had come down with a piece of bread for her. He had crouched beside her, trying to coax her into eating at least a few bites.
Jacqueline hadn't even acknowledged his presence.
Not a word.
Not a glance.
She had simply stared ahead, unmoving.
After trying for a while, Santiago had finally given up and left.
Jacqueline had surrendered to her thoughts now.
No more talking.
No more rambling to distract herself from the misery swallowing her whole.
Just silence.
And the endless questions spinning inside her mind.
What would happen now?
