"Hit it, boys!"
BA-DUM! BA-DUM! BA-DUM!
As soon as Yi Ren gave the signal, the entire city wall was drowned out by the rhythmic thumping of drums. This was followed by the high blare of trumpets, then the deep blast of trombones. Hundreds of soul puppets marched in unison, each holding an instrument as they moved together in perfect formation.
Around them was the soul puppet army, each one holding their respective weapon, long spears, long swords, bows, and shields, they marched to the beat, making the ground beneath them tremble. As dust billowed from their footsteps, those watching from atop the city wall noticed that the soul puppet army was lined up according to rank. Bronze, Silver, and Gold rank puppets made up most of their numbers, but behind them stood hundreds of Black Gold rank soul puppets in an imposing formation.
Above in the sky were two hundred Legend rank puppets, hovering majestically in the air. Their appearance was completely unique, with bodies seemingly made of porcelain. Milky white in color with golden accents, each possessed different characteristics, looking remarkably human, as if they had been modeled after real Legend rank experts of the past.
"T-This... what is this?" Huyan Xiong asked in disbelief, his body going rigid.
While he was aware that Ye Zong and Chen Zhenlong were hiding a powerful trump card, never did he imagine that it would be this formidable.
Just the sheer number of ordinary soul puppets alone was enough to make him tremble, so seeing the two hundred Legend rank soul puppets made his heart race to the point that he thought he might be having a heart attack.
No one could blame him. With this kind of firepower in their hands, it would be humiliating if they still lost Glory City to the demon beast horde.
Once all the soul puppets were in position, Yi Ren raised his arms, causing the marching band to come to an abrupt halt. The city fell into an intense silence.
From the distance, another wave of demon beasts emerged. This time, the wave was far larger in size, with more powerful destructive power, consisting almost entirely of Gold rank demon beasts.
The sight made the experts of Glory City feel uneasy.
Compared to the number of attacking enemies, the soul puppet army looked incredibly small.
But even so, the soul puppet army showed no sign of wavering. The tens of thousands of soul puppets on the ground remained unmoving like a mountain.
A footsteps can be heard as Ye Zong automaton walked on Yi Ren's side.
"My lovely lady Fu Po, please bless us with your lovely singing, will you." With Yi Ren's request, Fu Po, the songstress soul puppet, steps forward to the very edge of the city wall. Everyone watched with bated breath as she clasped her hands, closed her eyes, and breathed in a mouthful of air.
In the distance, the Black Gold rank demon beasts let out a deafening roar, causing the demon beast horde to surge forward. The furious cries of the demon beasts echoed across the battlefield, causing the Ancient Ancestral Mountain to shake beneath the advancing wave.
As the wave approached, Fu Po opened her mouth and began to sing. Her melodious voice echoed throughout Glory City, reaching the ears of every protector of Glory City.
Nostalgia stirred in everyone's hearts as surprised gasps escaped their lips.
The song was written and sung by Lady Yueliang Nushen, one of the ancestral founders of Glory City who possessed the Nine Crystal Yin Physique. The song had been created by her back in those days.
The message conveyed in the song was all about protecting the walls, the people, and their loved ones, even if it cost them their lives. It was a song created to honor all those who had fallen while protecting Glory City.
This is something Fu Po learned from Ye Yurou when they were hiding the City Lord Mansion's treasure vault during the Great Banquet Hall incident.
As Fu Po's enchanting voice swept across the land, all the soul puppets lifted their heads, their bodies emitting a soft light as their listless eyes flashed with a faint glow, as though their dormant souls had been awakened. The band raised their instruments as music played, reverberating through the air and accompanying Fu Po's singing.
The hearts of all the experts listening to the song pounded, their chests swelling with pride as the heroic tune drowned out the furious howling of the demon beast horde.
Seeing the rapidly approaching threat, the protectors all wore expressions of determination as they stepped to the edge of the city wall, weapons in hand, before transforming into their demon spirits.
"Go and protect Glory City!" Yi Ren shouted loudly, prompting the soul puppet army to charge forward. Dust billowed as their heavy footsteps shook the ground.
"Silver, it's time for us to join the fight as well," Chen Zhenlong shouted from atop his companion. At his command, Silver raised his front legs and let out thunderous cries.
"RAAAUULLL!"
The master and demon beast companion leapt from the top of the city wall, but instead of falling to the ground, Silver kicked his legs and ran through the air, leaving a large trail of clouds in his wake.
"Follow Master Chen Zhenlong!" Yi Ren ordered, prompting the fifty Legend rank soul puppets to shoot into the air and fly alongside Chen Zhenlong and Silver. Their destination was the very heart of the demon beast horde, with the goal of thinning out the enemy ranks.
"Everyone, prepare for battle! Kill every demon beast that manages to get past the soul puppet army!" Ye Zong shouted at the top of his lungs.
Hearing his command, all the demon spiritualists and fighters shouted in confirmation as everyone erupted into action.
BOOM!
CLASH!
CLANG!
Nie Li stood atop the wall, watching with a grim expression as the bloodbath ensued after the two forces collided.
He turned to look at Ye Ziyun. Just like everyone else, she had a determined look in her eyes as she took out her own weapon and circulated her spiritual energy in her body.
Nie Li opened his mouth to speak to her, but before he could say anything, the space around him rippled, startling him and his friends. Before Nie Li could react, a hand emerged from the rippling space and reached out to grab him by the hem of his shirt.
"What the-!" Nie Li exclaimed in shocked.
A sense of alarm crept over him, but before he could pry the hand away, he was stopped by the voice speaking to him.
"I need your help."
It was too late for Nie Li to complain as he was pulled into the rippling space, disappearing right in front of his friends.
"Ah, what was that?" Lu Piao asked in horror. He had just witnessed his friend being kidnapped by a hand.
"Um, that was Xue Hui. He was using his power to, um, get Nie Li. He said he needed Nie Li's help, so... ah... that's why," Xiao Ning'er explained uncertainly. She herself was bewildered by what had just happened, but since Xue Hui sounded unharmed, she felt a little relieved in her heart.
"You mean your boyfriend, who's currently fighting that enormous demon beast? What does he need Nie Li's help for? Act as bait or something?" Lu Piao exclaimed in bewilderment before he was harshly smacked on the back of the head by Du Ze.
"Stop being rude. Nie Li is powerful and has a great mind. If Xue Hui asked for his help, then obviously Nie Li must be needed for something," he reprimanded, making Lu Piao scratch the bruised spot, looking very apologetic.
"Yeah, that might be it. Sorry, my bad."
As the fight continued on the city wall, as well as between Yu Yan and Silao Grande, Nie Li was pulled far away to a certain location many miles from Glory City.
With a soft thud, Nie Li landed on his butt, disturbing the dust beneath him. He was pissed and looked increasingly irritated as he sent Xue Hui an exasperated glare.
"Can you at least not be so forceful when asking for help? My butt hurts," Nie Li protested as he stood up, dusting the dirt from his pants.
Xue Hui didn't reply. He remained silent as his eyes scanned the sight Infront of him.
This irritated Nie Li even more, so he turned to see what Xue Hui was looking at, only for his eyes to widen in astonishment.
From where they stood, they could see a giant sword. Its appearance was worn down by time and the elements, yet it remained in one piece.
Sheathed in the face of a mountain, its sheer size was enough to tower over the mountain itself. Judging by its appearance, one could tell that the sword had been abandoned for many centuries.
"Wood Land Empire, Behemoth Slayer Sword," Nie Li murmured in amazement.
There was a time when demon beasts called Behemoths roamed the divine continent, some of them even exceeding the size of Silao Grande. In order to combat these massive demon beasts, the Wood Land Empire created the Behemoth Slayer Sword.
As the name suggested, the Behemoth Slayer Sword was a giant sword with the size and power to slay gigantic demon beasts. It worked by activating its inscription array, which would unleash a vermillion flame, a powerful flame capable of slicing through the powerful defenses of any demon beasts.
The Wood Land Empire used this sword by making it float in the air and sending it straight toward their target. It was both simple and very effective.
But the Behemoth Slayer Sword had a major flaw, activating it consumed far too much spiritual energy, so much so that ten Legend rank experts had to pour all their spiritual energy into it just to make the thing float for a few breaths, making it impractical to use.
"You know, even if you bring me here, the two of us won't be able to make it budge, not to mention move it," Nie Li said skeptically, raising an eyebrow.
"I have something in mind, and I need that sword. The problem is, that thing was sealed with an inscription lock, and we won't be able to unsheathe it without breaking the seal."
Nie Li made a thoughtful expression as he listened to Xue Hui. From his few words alone, he could already tell why he had been brought here.
"You want my help to break that inscription lock?" Nie Li asked, making Xue Hui nod.
"It has two interconnected inscription locks, meaning that it can only be broken by two Inscription Grandmasters working in sync. And the last time I checked, there was no Inscription Grandmaster in Glory City. Then I remembered there was you," Xue Hui explained.
"And you didn't think of this beforehand? You know, before that enormous beast got near Glory City?" Nie Li asked in irritation, clearly still annoyed about what had happened earlier.
"Nie Li, I don't know how you perceive me, but I'm still human. I make mistakes and often overlook things. I never thought of doing this beforehand because it never crossed my mind until I was fighting Silao Grande," Xue Hui explained matter-of-factly, making Nie Li nod, feeling that he could somewhat relate to Xue Hui.
Then, something Xue Hui had said registered with him, making Nie Li panic.
"Wait, Silao Grande! You left that thing alone!?" Nie Li shouted in alarm. If that demon beast joined the attack, Glory City would surely be destroyed.
Xue Hui shook his head as he summoned his Origin Spheres.
"Silao Grande is being held back by a friend of mine, but that won't last for long. We need to move quickly. And unsheathe this sword, this is the only thing we can use to kill that beast."
As he spoke, Xue Hui's feet left the ground as he hovered in the air. At the same time, he sent Nie Li a knowing glance, to which Nie Li nodded before hopping onto the enlarged Origin Spheres.
The two shot into the air, leaving a streak of light behind them as they headed to unsheathe the Behemoth Slayer Sword.
