Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Hello Neighbours! (3)

The interior of the Possible household was just as warm and inviting as its exterior.

Sunlight streamed through broad windows, reflecting off polished wooden accents, framed family photos, and an open-concept living space that felt lived-in, comfortable, and distinctly energetic.

After showing her guests to the deep, plush couches in the living room, Kim offered a cheerful smile. "Make yourselves at home. I'll be right back with something to drink." With that, she darted toward the kitchen to fetch refreshments.

No sooner had Clark, Lana, Violet, and Dash settled into the comfortable cushions than a sudden, rhythmic rustle echoed from the hallway stairs.

Before anyone could ask, two identical, red-headed boys slid down the banister in perfect sync with practiced ease, executing a flawless landing on the hardwood floor with matching grins.

"Dash!" The twins chorused in impressive unison.

"Tim! Jim!" Dash beamed, practically leaping off the sofa as if reuniting with long-lost brothers.

Without missing a beat, the three boys immediately launched into a complex, bewilderingly elaborate secret handshake.

It involved crisp elbow taps, intricate finger snaps, synchronized chest bumps, and a theatrical air-guitar finish that left Lana blinking in utter disbelief.

"Is that... standard procedure for greeting people here, or did we miss the rehearsal?" Lana whispered to Clark, an amused twitch at the corner of her lips.

"I think we skipped the warm-up," Clark replied softly, holding back a laugh.

"New people?" Tim—or possibly Jim—asked, spinning around on his heel to inspect Clark and Lana with wide, intensely curious eyes.

"Yup!" Dash announced proudly, standing with his hands on his hips. "And guess what? They're going to be living right with us!"

Instead of acknowledging Dash's announcement, the twins instantly bypassed him, zeroing in on Clark and Lana like twin homing missiles.

"Where are you guys from? Do you like sci-fi movies? What's your take on the recent news regarding Superman?" Jim bombarded them without pausing to take a single breath. "Is Superman actually an alien entity, or is he some kind of top-secret military black-ops super-soldier equipped with an advanced anti-gravity suit?"

Clark laughed softly, leaning back into the soft cushions of the couch with an easy, unbothered posture. "Well, if you ask me, he seems like a guy who's just trying to do the right thing with the abilities he happens to have. Suit or no suit."

Tim groaned melodramatically, throwing his hands up in the air. "Boring! We need hard science, theoretical physics, or at least a plausible government conspiracy!" Despite the complaint, both twins were clearly thoroughly entertained.

Before the twin interrogators could launch into a follow-up cross-examination, Kim re-entered the living room carrying a heavy tray loaded with a pitcher of ice-cold lemonade and a generous plate of fresh cookies.

She took one look at her brothers hovering over the guests and pointed a stern, authoritative finger toward the hallway.

"Okay, you two gremlins. Knock it off," Kim commanded with absolute big-sister authority. "Don't you have a propulsion system to blow up in the shed?"

"It was one small chemical reaction, Kim!" Jim huffed defensively, crossing his arms.

"And it was completely under control!" Tim added, puffing out his chest. "The eyebrow singe was entirely accidental!"

"Out. Now," Kim repeated with an unyielding smile.

Recognizing defeat, the twins relented, but they didn't leave empty-handed. Grabbing a thoroughly eager Dash by both arms, they dragged him along into their orbit.

The trio disappeared down the hallway toward their basement laboratory, their voices echoing off the walls as they debated high-voltage capacitors and localized magnetic fields.

"Are we sure Dash is going to come back with all ten fingers?" Lana asked lightheartedly as the basement door clicked shut.

"Oh, he'll be fine," Kim assured her, placing the tray on the coffee table and handing out glasses. "At worst, his eyebrows might be a slightly different shade of blonde."

With the chaotic energy cleared, the remaining teenagers settled down to enjoy the lemonade and cookies.

**************

Over cold drinks, Clark and Lana explained their background—growing up in the small, tight-knit rural town of Smallville, Kansas, before making the monumental decision to move to San Francisco for better educational opportunities, fresh scenery, and a broader horizon.

"Smallville?" Kim repeated, leaning back against her armchair with a fascinated expression. "That sounds so peaceful. I've spent my whole life around high-tech gadgets, suburban chaos, and city hustle. Country life must feel like a completely different world."

"It definitely has its charms," Lana admitted, taking a small sip of her drink and smiling warmly. "Fresh air, wide open spaces, everyone knowing your name... though sometimes everyone knowing your business isn't entirely ideal."

"Fair point," Kim laughed, nodding in agreement. "Word travels fast when the population fits inside a single gymnasium."

As the conversation flowed naturally, Kim shared a bit about her own family. Her father, Dr. James Possible, was a senior aerospace engineer working at NASA's San Francisco research facility, while her mother, Dr. Annabeth Possible, was a prominent neurosurgeon at UCSF Health.

"Wow," Lana remarked, genuinely impressed. "An aerospace engineer and a neurosurgeon? That's quite the high-powered household."

"It gets pretty surreal around the dinner table," Kim admitted cheerfully. "Half the time my dad is talking about orbital trajectories, my mom is explaining brain mapping, and my brothers are secretly calculating how to turn the kitchen blender into a rocket launcher. So, where are you guys enrolled for high school?"

"Lowell High," Clark answered. "We start tomorrow, actually."

Kim's face lit up instantly. "No way! I go to Lowell too! We're going to be in the same school! If you guys need a tour, help finding your lockers, or someone to warn you about the mystery meat in the cafeteria, I can totally show you around."

"That would be amazing, Kim. Thank you," Lana said, genuinely appreciating the warm welcome.

As they continued discussing class schedules and campus layouts, Kim made a casual, observational remark. "So, how long have you two been best friends? You guys seem to know each other inside out."

Lana smiled softly. Leaning sideways, she casually rested her head against Clark's shoulder while lacing her fingers smoothly through his. "Oh, we've known each other since we were kids. But he isn't just my childhood friend—he's my boyfriend."

Kim froze for a brief microsecond, her glass of lemonade hovering inches from her lips. A subtle, faint pang of quiet disappointment flared in her chest, followed almost immediately by a wave of sheepish embarrassment over her earlier flustered reaction when first meeting Clark.

Of course he has a girlfriend, Kim thought to herself, mentally scolding her own brief distraction. And she's sitting right next to him looking absolutely perfect.

Recovering her composure seamlessly with a polite, genuine smile, Kim nodded warmly. "Ah, that's awesome! It's really rare for childhood friends to stick together like that."

A few minutes later, the heavy door down the hall flew open with a loud thud. Dash burst back into the living room, looking thoroughly disheveled with his hair standing straight up on end from intense static electricity.

"Okay! I think that's enough science for one day!" Dash panted, wide-eyed as he jogged over to Violet. "Vi, we need to go. Right now. They literally tried to test some electro majestic whatever shit on me!"

Violet burst into helpless laughter, while Clark and Lana shook their heads in pure amusement as they stood up from the couch.

"I think that's our cue to wrap up the tour," Clark said with a light chuckle, stepping forward. "Thanks for having us, Kim."

"Anytime! I'll see you guys tomorrow at Lowell!" Kim waved energetically as she escorted them out to the front door.

Walking back down the sunlit driveway, Lana squeezed Clark's hand, leaning close to his ear with a playful smirk. "So... aerospace engineers, neurosurgeons, superhero theories, static-charged footwear, and a stunning athletic classmate. Quite the neighborhood, wouldn't you say, Smallville?"

Clark smiled down at her, wrapping an arm comfortably around her shoulder. "It certainly is. And it sure as hell won't be boring."
