The final fight had devolved into something primal, something beyond sport or spectacle. The sand beneath them was no longer a battlefield. It was a graveyard of blood and fury, churned into a viscous mud that sucked at boots and splattered with every impact. The braziers roared like enraged beasts, flames leaping high enough to singe the banners overhead, casting the entire Pit in a hellish glow that made every drop of blood shimmer like liquid fire. The crowd was a single, mindless entity now, thousands of voices fused into one deafening, unending scream that vibrated through bones and stone alike. Nobles clawed at their boxes; commoners surged against barriers, some already trampled in the crush, all of them baying for death, for the ultimate yield that would end this bloodbath.
Alex charged, Flamefist Gauntlet roaring with crimson inferno, longsword trailing fire as he swung in a brutal overhand arc aimed to cleave the demonkin from horn to groin.
She met him halfway, claws extended like black daggers, dodging the sword by a breath and raking across his thigh. Leather parted; muscle tore in four deep, ragged lines, blood jetting hot and fast. Pain exploded through his leg, white-hot, blinding, but rage swallowed it whole. He twisted mid-stride, gauntlet punching forward, flame detonating into her chest.
The impact threw her back, armor buckling inward with a tortured screech, violet skin blistering black, ribs cracking like dry branches under the heat. She hit the sand hard, rolled, came up snarling, blood foaming at her lips from punctured lungs.
"You burn bright, little hero," she rasped, voice wet, bubbling, crimson eyes glowing with cruel amusement. "But fire needs air to live. And I'll choke yours out."
She lunged, faster than before, claws slashing in a whirlwind. Alex parried with his sword, steel screaming against claw, then countered with the gauntlet. Flame licked out, singeing her cloak, but she twisted away, raking across his back. Wyvern leather shredded; skin parted in deep furrows, blood running hot down his spine. He roared, spun, sword thrusting for her gut.
She caught the blade between crossed claws, steel grinding against keratin, then headbutted him square in the face. Horns gouged his forehead, skin splitting, blood sheeting into his eyes. His nose crunched; vision blurred red. He staggered, swung blind with the gauntlet.
Fire erupted, wild, uncontrolled, slamming into her shoulder. Armor melted; flesh charred, smell of burned meat thick in the air. She screamed, high, furious, then drove her knee into his solar plexus. Air exploded from his lungs; ribs flexed inward, cracking with sharp pops. He doubled over, gasping, sword dropping from numb fingers.
The crowd's roar was apocalyptic, deafening, physical, screams blending into one endless wave.
The demonkin stepped in, claws raking down his arm, opening deep, ragged gashes from shoulder to elbow. Blood sprayed; muscle tore; tendons snapped with wet pops. Pain lanced through him, searing, unrelenting, but he caught her wrist, twisted hard, bone grinding under his grip.
"You touched what's mine," he gasped, voice broken, rage-fueled, gauntlet flaring brighter.
He punched point-blank into her face.
Flame detonated, white-hot. Her scream cut off as skin blistered and peeled; one horn charred black, cracking down the middle. She jerked back, claws slashing blindly, caught his side. Ribs parted; blood gushed hot and thick. He roared, lunged forward, tackled her to the sand.
They hit hard, rolling in the blood-mud, claws against gauntlet, fire against shadow. She raked his chest, deep, vicious, flesh parting like wet cloth, blood pouring in sheets. He slammed the Flamefist into her thigh, flame searing muscle, skin splitting open in black-edged cracks, fat bubbling up. She screamed, bit down on his shoulder, fangs sinking deep, muscle tearing as she shook her head like a dog.
Blood filled his mouth; he spat, punched again, gauntlet to her gut. Fire exploded inward, armor melting, intestines blistering. She howled, claws digging into his back, raking down in long, ragged furrows that exposed bone. Pain was everything, white, red, black, but rage was stronger.
He wrapped the Flamefist around her throat, squeezed, flame licking into her skin. She choked, eyes bulging, claws scrabbling at his arm, tearing flesh in strips. Blood ran hot between them; the sand drank it all.
"You die," he snarled, face inches from hers, flame roaring louder. "For her. For touching what's mine."
Her crimson eyes widened, fear flashing for the first time, then she went limp, body convulsing as flame consumed her from the inside out. Skin blackened; horns broke; eyes burst in their sockets with wet pops. The smell of charred meat filled the Pit, thick, choking.
She yielded, forever.
The horn blared, belated, shocked.
Silence, absolute, then the stands detonated in a roar that shook the foundations.
"Flamefist! Flamefist! Flamefist!"
Alex rose slowly, blood pouring from a dozen wounds, longsword lost in the sand, Flamefist still smoking. He looked up, found Mara in the stands, her face pale, manic smile shattered into horror and pride.
The announcer's voice boomed, stunned.
"Winner… Alex the Flamefist! Champion of the Iron Ring!"
Mara stormed the barriers, shoving through the crowd, screaming his name. She reached the sand, vaulted the low wall, raced across the bloody slurry, slammed into him. Her arms wrapped around his neck, lips crashing into his, tears mixing with blood.
"You won," she sobbed, manic laughter breaking through. "You won, hero. You killed her. For us."
Alex held her close, one arm around her waist, then looked down at the charred, broken corpse.
"For Kaelith," he said, voice rough, angry still.
The crowd kept chanting, louder, coins raining down from the stands as tips.
But the victory felt hollow.
The demonkin was dead.
The rage wasn't gone.
And the night was far from over.

The Pit's attendants swarmed the sand like carrion birds, dragging the demonkin's ruined body away on hooks while others raked fresh sand over the worst of the gore. Torches flared brighter as the braziers were stoked higher. A raised platform of dark iron and polished obsidian rose from the center of the arena on chains, groaning under its own weight. Atop it stood the Pit Master, a gaunt figure in black robes edged with crimson, flanked by armored guards bearing the Iron Ring's sigil: a clenched fist wrapped in chains.
The announcer's voice rolled again, amplified by some unseen magic.
"People of the Pit! Witnesses to blood and fire! Tonight, we crown the unbreakable! The unyielding! Alex the Flamefist, Champion of the Iron Ring Open Bracket!"
The platform descended to sand level. Guards formed a loose cordon as Alex limped forward, Mara still clinging to his side, her staff planted like a banner. The crowd parted just enough for them to reach the steps. Coins and flowers; wilted, and blood-spattered, rained around them.
Alex climbed the steps alone at first, Mara a pace behind. His body screamed with every movement, wounds weeping fresh blood, but he stood tall. The Flamefist Gauntlet still flickered weakly, ruby dim but defiant.
The Pit Master raised both hands. Silence fell, heavy and expectant.
"By right of combat, by fire and steel, by the will of the crowd and the blood on the sand, I declare Alex the Flamefist Champion!"
A massive iron crown, forged like twisted flames and thorns, studded with rubies that matched his gauntlet, was lifted high. The Pit Master placed it on Alex's head with deliberate ceremony. It was heavy, cold against his fevered skin.
The crowd erupted anew.
A chest of dark wood was dragged forward, lid thrown open. Inside gleamed the prize: sacks of gold heavy enough to stagger a man, a belt of black wyvern hide studded with obsidian, a sealed scroll granting free passage and favor in the Pit's territories, and a single, gleaming rudis, wooden sword of freedom, symbolic here but heavy with meaning.
The Pit Master spoke again, voice carrying.
"Champion! Claim your spoils. And name your companions, for the Iron Ring honors strength in all forms."
Alex turned, extended a bloodied hand to Mara. She stepped up beside him, chin high, eyes fierce despite the tear tracks. Then he looked toward the tunnel where Kaelith had been carried earlier, still too wounded to stand, but attendants had brought her on a litter, propped against furs, amber eyes locked on him.
Two guards lifted the litter carefully onto the platform. Kaelith was pale beneath her fur, bandages stark white, but she managed a weak, toothy grin as they set her down beside Alex.
He placed one hand on her shoulder, the other around Mara's waist.
"These are mine," he said, voice raw but steady. "My women. My strength. They stand with me."
The Pit Master nodded once.
"Then the Iron Ring acknowledges them. Champion Alex the Flamefist, and his chosen!"
The crowd roared approval, some chanting the women's names now too: "Beastclaw! Mara! Flamefist!"
Gold was pressed into Alex's hands; the belt buckled around his waist over torn leather. Mara took the scroll, fingers trembling with manic joy. Kaelith's claws curled weakly around the rudis, holding it like a promise.
Alex looked out over the sea of faces, crown heavy, body broken but unbowed.
The Pit had its champion.
But the fire in his eyes said the vengeance wasn't finished.
The night burned on.
