Chapter 98 - Chapter 98: With Me Here, Don’t Be Afraid

[Chinatown]

"Stop! Stop quickly!"

"Please, John, stop!"

"I… I can't take it anymore!"

Inside Caitlin's home, in the living room, the girl sat in the recliner and let out a soft cry, then panted heavily, sweat pouring down like rain.

She said in disbelief, "I didn't expect that you even know foot massage."

"I'm really curious. Is there anything in this world that you don't know?"

After just playing the role of a masseur, Alex washed his hands and said, "Of course there is."

Caitlin asked curiously, "For example?"

He placed Caitlin's pair of pale, beautifully shaped long legs into the medicinal water, then stood up and said, "For example, I don't understand your heart."

With her legs soaked in the hot water, the comfort made Caitlin hum a few times. Then when she heard Alex's words, her face immediately turned rosy.

Alex stopped at the right moment and did not continue going deeper into the topic. Instead he said, "Soaking your feet will improve blood circulation. I think it should help improve your sleep."

Caitlin nodded.

At this time, the news host on the television channel said, ["Good evening to the viewers in front of the television."]

["This is the AAB News Channel. Tonight, I will once again bring you today's major news."]

["Just today, a major event happened in our country. I believe many people already know about it."]

["That's right. Our hero, our guardian, our patriot, our Homelander has today been awarded the rank of Army Colonel by the Federation, and will also serve as the Director of the Department of Superhuman Supervision under the Ministry of Defense!"]

["This is the first superhuman official in the history of the Federation."]

["All along, the Federation has upheld the principle of not appointing superhuman officials and not recruiting superhuman soldiers."]

["But today, Homelander has become a member of the federal government. What exactly does this mean? Let us connect with Professor Truman from the Department of Superhuman Studies at Harvard University."]

["Let's hear what insights he has…"]

Listening to the news broadcast on television, Caitlin suddenly said softly, "Homelander must be very lonely, right?"

Alex froze for a moment and looked at the girl beside him.

"Why do you say that?"

"I don't think he's lonely."

"He's the most powerful person in the world, and now he's also become a federal official. How could he be lonely?"

Caitlin took off her sunglasses, revealing dull, gray-white eyes with no luster.

"Loneliness has nothing to do with whether he has power or what kind of social status he has."

"In my hometown there's a saying: 'It's unbearably cold at the top.'"

"Homelander stands so high that almost no one is qualified to be his friend, yet he has many enemies."

"When he has troubles, no one will listen to him talk about them."

"When he feels down, no one can comfort him."

"When he achieves great accomplishments, likewise no one is qualified to share them with him."

"So I think he must be very lonely."

Looking at the girl soaking her feet, Alex suddenly didn't know how to respond.

Ever since crossing over, he had barely stopped for a moment, so he had never thought about these things.

But now that Caitlin said it, it really did seem that way.

Looking around, enemies surrounded him everywhere.

But friends were almost nonexistent.

Angelina was his servant.

Maeve's "friendship" at most only reached the bed.

'Friends? Tsk! What do I need friends for? Being alone by myself is already pretty good.'

Just as the corner of Alex's mouth lifted slightly, Caitlin said, "Sorry. Sometimes I say things that make no sense."

"Oh right, I just bought some black tea. I'll make a cup for you."

As she spoke, Caitlin wiped her feet and then walked toward the kitchen. At this moment, a gust of wind blew through the kitchen and shut the door.

Caitlin reached out and pushed the door open, about to walk inside, when she heard Alex suddenly shout, "Don't move!"

Caitlin was startled, but she stopped and turned around to ask, "What's wrong, Mr. John?"

Alex couldn't speak for the moment.

When Caitlin opened the kitchen door, inside the doorway there was actually an extremely dazzling, dreamlike mass of colorful light.

That light surged and shifted, as if it were a gate leading to another world.

With her back facing that cluster of light, Caitlin's outline was traced with a brilliant halo, yet she had no awareness of it at all.

Alex sighed in his heart.

This was probably the "door" Caitlin used to travel between different universes.

Good thing she was blind. If a normal person saw such a door, they probably wouldn't dare step into it.

Alex stood up, walked to Caitlin's side, and took her hand.

After thinking for a moment, he said in a low voice, "Caitlin, remember the 'sleepwalking' you mentioned before?"

"It has appeared now. It's not without warning, it's just that you didn't know."

Alex briefly described the situation.

Caitlin immediately stepped back two steps, "Th-then let's stay in the living room instead?"

Alex asked, "Are you sure it will disappear on its own?"

Caitlin shook her head, "I'm not sure, but it's better not to take risks."

"But what if it never disappears?", Alex tried to encourage her to act.

Caitlin thought for a moment, then tightened her grip on Alex's hand.

"Then how about this, Mr. John. You stay in the living room."

"After I leave, if it disappears, then go home."

"Don't worry about me. I'll come back."

Alex glanced at her and smiled.

"Caitlin, are we friends?"

Caitlin froze, lowered her head, and softly asked back, "Mr. John, do you think we're friends?"

Alex tightened his hold on her hand.

"I don't know what you think, but I want to be your friend."

"So let me go in with you."

"This will be a little secret between the two of us, a secret that only real friends know."

Caitlin's body trembled slightly. Then she raised her head.

"Can you help me get my sunglasses and my white cane?"

"Wait a moment."

A moment later, Caitlin put on her sunglasses. One hand held the white cane, while the other held Alex's hand.

"Shall we go?", the girl asked.

Alex smiled, "Let's go!"

So the two of them walked toward the kitchen and stepped into that magical, dazzling rainbow light. Almost without any gap.

———

The very next second after stepping into the colored light, Alex felt wind hitting his face. Then the roar of vehicles and people surged toward him, along with crazily blaring horns.

Immediately after, he saw a blinding light flash in front of his eyes. Within that light, a truck was rushing straight toward them.

Alex instantly covered Caitlin with his bio-force field. Then light flared in his eyes as two golden beams shot out. Sweeping upward, they instantly split the speeding truck into two halves.

The separated halves scraped across the ground, throwing sparks, and passed by Alex and Caitlin.

Although Caitlin couldn't see, she could hear and feel the danger, and she couldn't help but cry out.

But immediately afterward she felt warmth.

Alex had pulled her into his arms.

"With me here, don't be afraid."
